Default Talk me into a GMC 5.3

I've got some pretty basic questions, so here goes.
What does it take to get a 5.3 rc/swb to run 13's? I'm considering selling my truck and getting a cheaper 02. I'll be giving up a pretty quick ride and I just don't want to get into a 5.3 and not be happy what so ever.
Can it be done under $1000? Headers, pulley, programmer and electric fans? Or will I really have to dump some cash into it.
I know that the 01 5.3 my dad has ran 15.4 w/ zero mods and its probably not that much faster now w/ cai and programmer. I'm just concerned that I'll be throwing money away just to get in the neighbor hood of where I am now.
The reason for the change is basically I want certain mods and they aren't avail for my truck right now and I'm tired of waiting. Its mostly an issue of I want something to wrench on.

I think it will be hard to hit 13s for under 1000. A decent nos kit will run you 600+

I want to do it w/o getting in to the motor and w/o spray. I'm running high 13's on motor right now w/ a cold air kit and a muffler.

**** let see,
If you buy an aftermarket CAI and not make one = $200+
Long tubes = $700+

thats $900+ and you're still not in the 13s

hmm, this does not look promising. I'd probably make my own cold air though. Nothing like a mandrel bent 4" tube ducted under the truck.
I'm not trying to stick to a $1000 budget but I just didn't want someone yelling "Put C5r heads on it and stroke it"

A full size truck weighs quite a bit more than an F-body, which is what it appears your driving. You're not going to get 13's with a few external engine bolt-ons, you'll need at least a cam and converter, plus a few breathing mods (intake, exhaust) to get there.

Actually the truck I'd be giving up is a 4300# 03 Ram. The camaro is long gone and I didn't feel like changing the user name.
I don't mind doing a cam swap but there is a lot of cost involved w/ that.

I'm just really interested in the performance potential of the trucks since I can get one for about 1/2 the payment I have now and they put out 2 times the mpg.
I plan on a 3/4 drop, cervini CF hood, on a black truck of course and I wanted it to be able to back up a tough stance.
I already know that the summit headers don't help, JBA cat back doesn't help and the k&n didn't do anything, so I"m just digging for ideas. Has anyone done the 6L intake swap they talked about in the new chevy HI-Perf issue?
