theory about handhelds vs. tunes
has anyone thought about getting a dyno from both, then comparing the hp#'s to the price. like u can get a hpp3 for $150 and a custom tune runs about $600... so do u get 4x the hp with the custom tune?

I don't know what planet you are living on, but those prices are way off. If you want to go with a used hypertech then the $150 might be on, but you can get a custom tune for as little as $250. A new Hypertech costs more than that.

well a hyper tech will help out a stock truck as good as a custom tune IMO but once you start modding the vehicle the custom tune will kick its a$$. I have personaly done a test the same night on my old truck, put the hyper tech performance tune in and ran it, then took it out and left the shift point at the same as with the hyper tune and ran the same time all the way from 60' to 1/4 mile.

i dont really know about stock internal motors but i would put my money on a custom tune if you have any internal mods(heads, cam, more cubes) or are boosting it.
if your interested in learing how to do it yourself and have a little patience i highly recomend learing how to do it yourself. hptuners and one of those $400widebands and you will be set up to tune over and over no matter how many mods you have. the $400 wideband will be good for an future hotrods too so it is more of a tool investment. there is lots of help avaliable around here, it is prety easy and most people agree on the methods so there is no black magic to it.
