You are correct in that the 5.3L is basically a small bore LS1, but also keep in mind these trucks weigh another 1500-2000lbs more and tow/haul things all the time. A long duration cam kills low end power, which is what the 224 would do. That power band would start around 2130 rpms in a 5.3L being smaller in displacement, whereas a smarter choice of cam in a truck should not exceed making "truck" power above 1000.

His truck is already lifted like 8 inches with big MT wheels and tires, he primarily uses it for off roading, so something that makes lots of torque I would guess?

Read this whole thread over again. There you'll find your answer, especially for a lifted truck.

A lil' too lopey for me, but maybe I'm wrong about the whole thing. I spend ALOT of time around 1,200rpm trundling down the highway. Haul a good load of dirt down to the bumpstops somewhat regularly and transport a 600lb quad regularly. I was bankin' on the Vinci 065 DUR @ .050" 200*/ 208*
LIFT .502 / .502
OVERLAP 38*
LSA 114*....................

My idle was set at the factory 575 in that clip.
I left it there because I liked the sound of it.
You could easily bump it up a bit higher to smooth it out.
That cam has as much torque at 1200rpm as the stock cam at 4000.
You won't be disappointed.
I have hauled many 3000# loads of firewood in the bed and it does very well.
Not to mention full trailers of firewood also.

my $.02

Hmm, yeah. First off- don't mean to hijack the thread, but I was gonna ask the same question and this thread was already in progress. But to the idle, I see the logic here; my moms '07 Escalade with the 6.2 is like Manna from Heaven, which is why I was asking around on cam specs. One day I sat still and listened to the idle and observed it idles at 650rpm and has a slight lope to it, ya kinda gotta listen for it. Bonus is that if you don't put the whip to it it'll rival my 5.3 in gas mileage, also cruisding it feels pretty good in the torque with plenty left on tap...............

P.S. Oh yeah- what's the overlap on the 259 from comp.............

I'm still studying, I'm scared to death of duration is the thing...........
Edit; if anyone can please explain a little about what's desired in a cam. What I know so far- a tighter LSA tanslates into earlier valve events and brings on power sooner. Wide LSA and reasonable duration yeild smooth idle and high cylinder pressure. Longer duration will assist in power production on the upper end. It's a fine line and everything is a compromise which is why I was drawn to the Vinci 065 cam, yes- it closely resembles the '00 LS1 cam with .500 in and ext as well as the Crane Zcam, but it lies on a 114 LSA rather than 115 or 115.5..................

Considering you cannot use your stock springs for that cam and would have to upgrade to at least inexpensive .550 LS6 springs, I'd try to squeeze a bit more lift out of the cam to better your torque production across the entire rev range. The XR259 will have .515in and .522ex lift compared to that vinci cam while still leaving plenty of headroom for the springs so they don't wear out. I'd go as far as a 210/212 .550/.550" 112 LSA on a DD 5.3L if I could but I was in a bind and couldn't want wait for a custom cam to be made.
