I used a torque wrench. I also used loctite. The torquewrench I used was one of those cheapy $20 ones though. It clicks when it gets to the torque, no dial. Would they tick if they were over torqued?

I used the air technique and the piston technique. (I didnt take a one way valve out of the hose coupler and there was no pressure in the cylinder at all. I got totally lucky that the piston was there to catch it. Strangely enough, the valves were held up quite a bit just by the seal.

Raise the piston all the way to the top or using a threaded air hose fitting in the spark plug hole, using the compressed air to keep the vavle from falling?

I turn the engine to TDC do two cylinders (two will be at TDC at the same time) rotate 90* then do two more, etc etc. You can line up the cam dots for #1 and ??. I used to know what 2 were next, but now I just stick a rod down the spark plug hole and see if the piston is up, or not.

I have heard that if you put a new higher lift cam on old lifters that it can cause issues. I had an intermittent tapping issue for awhile too, would come and go, and eventually it went and never came back. Mine would start tapping while cruising on the freeway or whatever, but as soon as I brought the engine back down to idle it would go away.
