Default Time to plan the 383 build

It’s time to plan the 383 build for my blazer. Starting with a 97 vortec block. Factory roller 2 bolt. Want some input, advice, thoughts, opinions, recommendations.

Truck is an 84 k5 on 37’s with one ton axles and 4.88’s with a locked rear and limited slip front. Th350 trans. I’m a power junkie so that’s king but I don’t need a high rpm power engine. Truck is a street cruiser but occasionally sees rocks. By occasionally I mean 3-4 times a year but it’s going to go down despite what @arthursc2 says.

So my thoughts are a summit 383 stroker kit with flat top pistons. Have the rotating assembly balanced. Aluminum heads with a chamber around 62cc. I got no issues running premium so higher compression isn’t an issue. I’ve got an edelbrock carb on it I’ll be reusing along with long tubes and true duals. It’s got a Holley street dominator manifold on it that I could reuse but I’m not opposed to getting a new one. I can’t spec a cam to save my life so I’m open to all options here. I want something in the 0-6000rpm range with a decent idle but some chop to it.

I am planning on swapping the converter out to something a little looser than factory. I’m thinking around 1800 stall or something like that.

Sounds like a crawler to me 😉

wish I knew more about that Pre-99 Vortec life. Can't really help with parts selection or anything of the like. Sure do wanna hear this thing tho!

I’m hoping it sounds awesome and cranks out 400+ at the flywheel. This stock 190hp crap sucks haha.

I built a nasty 306 for my dads 77 bronco. Bored 30 over, balanced, trick flow twisted wedge cnc’d heads, trick flow stage 2 cam, dual plane edelbrock intake, long tubes and true duals. Thing is nasty and winds out to 6000 with ease. Barks the 35’s into 3rd gear. I gotta at least be faster than this haha.

Back in the day had two 65 pickups with 350/350 engine and trans and 3.73's. Pre roller I did comp 270 and the other comp 280. 1 was quicker in the 1/8 the other quicker in the 1/4. Probably something along the lines of their 260 would work. Later put a 408 and isky 280 in one but pulled it out and swapped it into my 73 Vega GT. Haven't looked in many years so no idea what's available nowadays but I'd go tight on lobe center angle like 108-110 for grunt. Congrats it will be fun. Love this!

Really basic honestly. The better head you can afford means the smaller the camshaft you can run that is more geared towards torque. But honestly a low 230s duration cam isn't big in a 383 either. If you go aluminum heads probably shoot for 10:1 or so. You don't need anything crazy for a 6000 rpm and less stroker. A stock roller block and roller cam setup is a money saver... I wouldn't even bother with flat tappet stuff anymore. The last basic one I dealt with was a 400 that had Vortecs, a 280 (advetertised) comp roller and in that 9.5:1 compression range. It was a low 400 hp setup with tons of midrange torque as we put it together for a jet boat. The options are endless lol. Jarrett (stock48) on here could spec you the whole thing if you ask him... Its what he does lol.

Block is a stock roller and I’ll be doing a roller cam. No interest in flat tappet. 10:1 is where I’m aiming for compression.

I'm budgeting currently. From what I'm wanting to do and parts shopping, machining costs, I'm probably looking in the 4-5k range.

The best money you will spend is heads. You don't need a forged anything rotating assembly... cast crank, decent rods and hyper pistons will live forever because you aren't pushing into the realm of anything a stock bottom end small block can handle. Don't buy cheap chinesium aluminum heads, AFR's, Darts, World, etc...
