Toning down 4" exhaust
#41
Here's a question, I have a 4" exhaust waiting to go on and was wondering something. Does anyone have any room underneath to mount a single 4" cat somewhere? I was thinking of doing this to quiet things down a bit and to clean up the smell. What are your thoughts, guys? I don't want to cut and weld the headers.

The way I look at it it can't be any worse than a turbo right under the hood of my truck. I believe those put off a little more heat too ha ha. I don't think we have to worry about the bed

So KB did his thing, and welded the tailpipe back on after the underbed was notched. No clearance issues now. He also welded on a stainless 4" section of pipe that has a bit of a turndown at the end - nice touch and can be polished to a mirror finish when I get the time. The tip doesn't come all the way out, so it's got a subtle look - I like it. He also welded in a Helmholtz chamber behind the muffler which seems to have killed drone and lowered sound levels in the cab too. I was driving today and came to a stop on the highway and had to double check to make sure the motor was still running

I want to run a straight pipe out back to hear turbine whistle but also want to quiet it down with the helmholtz chamber/resonator. Most mufflers kill turbine whistle.

I would LOVE to hear a sound clip of your exhaust. Is it that much better with the helmholtz chamber? Does that helmholtz quiet it down at idle too? That's kind of weird, my 3.5 magnaflow 12909 muffler killed my turbine whistle. But then again it wasn't the diesel style muffler.
