Just got mine back from the dealer with a fresh trans rebuild. Yep, it has the infamous shudder too! Does anyone here have the 4L65 trans? I've heard they are having more issues than the 4L60s. Is this true? Thanks for the LubeGard tip. I'm gonna buy some today and check back with you guys in a couple of days.

what year and model is your truck? What trucks do they put the 4l65 in?

I see you live in reseda, CA. Wanna go to Palmdale LACR on the 20th? A bunch of guys from the valley are planning to go!

4L65 is the AWD transmission, Escalade Silverado SS and some GMCs.

I have a '01 ECSB with a modded 5.3l engine. I just bought the truck from a family member. The wife's gonna drive it daily. It runs low 15s at Palmdale loaded with a glass shell, tools and a tool box I'd really LOVE to go with you to Palmdale, but I'm giving the transmission some easy time. We've broke the damned thing no less than eight times. We still have the converter, but no more shift kit. It was brutal on the transmission. I'm changing injectors (maybe this weekend) and will dyno and hit the track again soon. Thanks for the invite.
If you get to Reseda ,come on by my shop and introduce yourself. I'll show you the CNC cylinder heads we make for the 4.8l/5.3l engines.

Whats the address of your shop? Im going up to reseda this sunday for dyno day, at morgan motorsports.

What mods do you have on your truck!

That sucks about your trucks problems! You must be running a nice high stall and some other serious mods to break your tranny 8 times!

My shop is a block away from MMS. The street address is 18405 Hart St. I'm not sure I'll be there sunday, but if I'm not maybe you can stop by some other time.
As far as mods to the truck, it was the first to get our CNC ported heads. It also has a Comp 214º/.559" cam, Edelbrock headers and custom exhaust with Magnaflow muffler, K&N cold air kit, Yank 2600 Thruster and 4:10 gears. It's a blast to drive.
I suspect the shift kit was causing the trans failures. It shifted like a pro stock car which made for lots of 2nd and 3rd gear tire chirps probably too much kill. Now that my wife is driving it things have settled down. Soon I can make some more tweaks and mods I still have 20000 miles left on the GM extended warranty.
I hope to catch up to you sometime soon.

2nd/3rd gear chirps! Sounds fun! So has GM replaced all 3 trannys!? If so thats surprising considering your mods, specifically the shift kit and TC.

I would eventually like to get a TC. How do you like your 2600? Do you wish you went with a higher TC?
How long do you think a stock tranny would last with such a TC?

I want a radix kit but am not ready to start blowing trannys. In fact since my truck is my daily driver I dont think I will get a supercharger any time soon. My last car, which I still own, a turbo 11 second civic was modded to the point that its SO not street legal. Cops in the valley LOVE to hassle imports so I just garaged it now and drive it strictly on the track. I dont want to mod my truck as much as my honda, something that would probably end up resulting in the garage of my truck too!

I just want a fast truck, and its pretty quick now. Once the warranty is out I will definitely throw in a cam and TC. I keep telling myself that but I dont know if I can wait 3 years!

Anyway should I call your shop on Sunday? Im going over to Morgan motorsports pretty early, like 8am or something. If not then I will definitely stop by your shop! Maybe in the next week or so! I would love to see those heads you run/make!

So what kind of horspower/quarter mile potential does a normally aspirated 5.3 have?

I think a fully built 5.3 might be more appealing and less strain on the tranny (than a supercharger). What do you think? Should I go with a built 6 liter instead?

Last April we installed the heads and cam and headers. We tried tuning with a HPP3 The truck ran ok, but was very sluggish below 2500. A couple of months later we put the Yank in and got Edit to adjust gear change speeds and firmness. The following month we put the 4.10 gears in. Both the converter and gears really made the whole combination work. All in all, the truck runs really well for a daily driver. If I wanted more torque/horsepower I would consider building a 6.0l. You can gather the parts over months/years then do a whole swap out.
As far as converters go, hitting the driveline with lots of stall makes for some great ets, but the compromise is poor gas mileage, broken transmissions and rear ends.
Try calling the shop on sunday. If I'm here I'll answer the phone. If not, come by some other time and I'll be happy to show you our stuff. Good luck on the dyno sunday.
