True Dual exhaust system? Is it worth it?
I want to get an exhaust as soon as possible so I am trying to look at all of my options. I was thinking about a true dual exhaust system. The factory pipe on the drivers side crosses over underneath the truck to form one pipe with the drivers side pipe. This single pipe then runs to the muffler. The drivers side pipe is a 3" pipe, but it becomes flat as it runs underneath the truck to the passenger side (I assume this was done for clearence issues). I would think that going to a true dual exhaust would really help for some extra horsepower, as opposed to one of your basic bolt on cat back systems.
Does anyone know how much this would cost if I went with a set of Dynomax UltraFlo mufflers? Do you think a true dual system would provide any considerable power gains over one of your "regular" bolt on systems? Does anyone have any links to dyno charts that show power differences between a true dual and regular aftermarket exhaust?

i have true dual flows and i have noticed a large gain in the performance of my 01 silverado. It was even better with the upd i purchased through a link off of this site. IMO it is deff. worth it. I paid 500 for the complete system with stainless steel z28/corvette exhaust tips. which i could have done without, btw.

Sounds cool. What brand is your exhaust? Did you have to have a muffler shop put it together? Do you have any pics of the setup?

Re: True Dual exhaust system? Is it worth it?
I have true dual, 3 inch pipe stock converters, no mufflers and 4 inch straight cut tips exiting out each side. People I know that dont git there's true dualed wish later on that they did. I dont fool with any mufflers, but mabey where you live they have some noise polution law... and plus I like my rides a little loud. As for performance I think it gives slight increase, over having a single exhaust set-up ,but I guess it depends on what other exhaust parts you will be using in the future (headers,hi-flow cats...) I didnt order any cat-back system, I just took it too a trusted local muffler shop and told them what I wanted. Hope this helps with making the right choice for you.

i too have true dual flowmaster 40s, dumped right before the axle. i don't get the resonance most people talk about (apparently flowmasters are known for interior resonance) except for when i'm in reverse at low speeds. i love my exaust. its barely noticeable and idle and crusing speeds. but if i get on it it roars. they did help my high end power, but i have no time to prove it (only the SOTP meter). just don't go too big with the pipes, nuthin bigger than 2.5 inch. opening up these motors too much can rob low-end torque.
me and 1stoopidfly4.8 had our exaust done at the same shop. they just put it together with their generic stainless steel tubing and the flowmaster mufflers. so it wasn't really a brand of exaust per-say.
oh yeah 1stoopidfly4.8, there is NO WAY you could have done without those tips. cuz you would be that much less of a little prettyboy

There are several of us on here (me, BigJ, Fast4.8, sshotrods) that are running the same true dual setup with differnent mufflers. I installed mine the same time I put on my headers so I can't give a true comparason but I love my exaust set up now. There are pics of it on my page too.

It all depends on who you talk to w/ the whole "power loss" w/ true duals. There are a few Fbody members that when switched to true duals, lost some power.
True duals sound better, imo. It may just be the firing order over the LS1/6, but LT1/4 and 5 Vettes sound KILLER w/ aftermarket exhaust...most of the LS1 systems seem to be too quiet ( but do scream @ WOT...)
Will you see a power loss? Thats debateable, i doubt that if you went along w/ the same system someone else had, that you're going to see the exact #s they did...the likely hood of that happening are slim. But, its all in what you want. We all want more power, but it may not be where you want it (low end vs top end or vice versa)
I say go for it, put down the dinero and go WOT!!!

Re: True Dual exhaust system? Is it worth it?
Yes , you will loose a little on the bottom end. That is very evident by me running with the cutouts open and closed. My 1/4 mile time are quicker open and dyno#'s are up 3-4 rw open. I do have more low end hit when they are closed. Now like I said in the earlier post, if I had more HP to work witrh, that would only increase the performance of he dual. I would not go with bigger than 2- 2.5" unless you are over 350c.i. The back pressure issue really only comes into play for powerband spreads. Less restrictive exhaust = more on the top end and vice versa. If you go with duals, I highly recomend an X pipe, since the crossover Y is unequal.

I have pics on my page also. I just need more HP to really take advantage of it. No complaints though.
