Is it True that the new LS1 5.3 Truck engines Don't have as tighter tolerances as the
Hey Guys! I just talked to a Service Manager from Pioneer Chevy in Marriatta OH. He told me that these new engines ,5.3 and 4.8, are not as tight in tolerance as the old 350 engines where.
I was telling him that my truck has 2500 miles on it and has used about 3/4 Quart of oil.
He Said OH it was Just Blowby from the Loose Tolerances.
Can you guys explain to me about the tolerances of these new motors are the just as good as the old 350's or what.
Surely GM would not produce a motor that oil will seep through cracks in it????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please Let Me Know.

Poor tolerances is the reason cited behind the knocking problem that some people are having.
So YES I do believe the tolerances are not as good. I've also heard this has something to do with GM engine manufacturing having moved to Mexico (although I don't know this for fact).

Seriously though, the 01-02 truck motors are supposed to have tighter clearances than the 99-00 motors. Some 5.3/4.8 trucks use oil because it gets sucked thru the PCV system. You can check the PCV valve to see if you have the newer version. The newer one has a small pinhole sized opening, where the older one has a small aspirin sized opening.
2500 miles is still really too early to start worrying about oil consumption, unless it is like draining the oil pan every 1000 miles.

GnatGoSplat.... I was told that about 80% of Chevy engines are being built in Mexico, while a lucky 20% (Mine) were built in Canada. I dont know if its fully true, but thats what I was told

What exactly does the PVC valve do, and how often shoud it be changed? I have a 99' 5.3, and my truck has never used oil, and I do not think my PVC valve has ever been changed. Is it a good idea to get it changed? I am changing the fuel filter and some other maintnace stuff soon, so I want to cover everything. Thanks, Kent.

do it like once a year. I think it just recirculates some of the air from in the valve cover back into the intake. However, I would like to know how I can tell if my engine is Canadian or Mexican in origin?

Mine is a 2k with 32k miles and its never lower then a half a quart at the 3-4k mile mark on the service. Once I stretched the oil change to 5k and checked it before I drained it and it still wasn't more then a 1/3qt low. Thats not bad considering I run the **** out of it and at the time was pulling a 1000lb trailer 100 miles a week, every week. Never smoked either. Must have been a few bad apples in the bunch or something.

I have a 5.3 from '00 and it uses NO oil every 3000 miles, guess I was lucky. A friend had a Lumina and it used a quart every 3000 miles and the dealer told him up to one quart is normal engine oil usage. I think if there is a problem they can't figure out they say it is normal. Like my rear end shifted over one inch the last dealer said some trucks just do that. My dad's '00 Jimmy pops when turning tight and the dealer replaced a lot of steering components, it still pops and they now say it is normal. Dealers can just make you mad .

Some of the LS1/6 and new Vortech's are made in a Powertrain plant in Romulus, MI (Metro Detroit). Don't know how to tell which engine came from which plant though.

My 2K never uses oil I've got 24634 miles on it I've never run anything but mobil 1 since 6K. It's never been low. I had a 2K Z-28 that used to suck oil thru the pcv valve.
