Default up grading engines?

I am starting a 97 chevy 4X4 project with a weak 305 in a couple of months and wondering what engines are compatible with this truck. If i went with a newer motor such as 5.3 or 6.0, how would it effect my computer and could I use the wire harness off a newer truck for this?

You're looking at a total reconfiguration. In 99 GM changed just about everything as far as the engine and tranny goes, so you are not looking at an easy swap by any means. I found myself in the same boat as you, swapping from a 96 4.3L which is pretty much the same computer and tranny as your 305, and upgraded to the newer Gen III motor of today. It has not been easy one bit. I've run into obstacles with incompatibility issues at every turn of the way.

The easiest way for you would be to find a complete V8/tranny pull out of a newer 99+ truck, van or SUV and have a custom wiring harness made for you.

Or just put a nicely built 350 in it. That simplifies alot of things. The cost of everything to upgrade to the 99+, I could justify buying a 99+ truck for the price you will have wrapped up in the conversion. Dont forget how cheap you can pick up trucks these days. especially 8-9 year old trucks....just an idea.

Default Thanks for the help

That sounds good. I am new with the newer trucks all i ever messed with where 87 or older chevys. and last year i had a leaky intake gasket once i replaced that i started getting more confedent with the model and after reading a couple of articles i thought i would look into that option. i think i will stick to finding a good 350 or when i get back from iraq trade my 454 for something good.

I believe Painless wiring sells a kit for that application.

I was part of a swap into a late 70's Malibu, and we used that kit which saved alot of time trying to mod the harness.
