Using underdrive pulleys w/ overdrive alt. pulleys = problem-free?
My concerns:
Bottom line - what negative side effects could occur if using a quality U/D pulley like SLP/Powerbond if you are also using a quality O/D alternator pulley (using factory alternator)? Thanks!
- This set-up would be used for a daily driver (5.3L Tahoe) that I am trying to make perform better. Most other bolt-on mods already performed.
- Texas heat and humidity, so I will be compensating for the air conditioner with an O/D alternator pulley. (is this self-defeating for power gains?)
- Underpowering anything that cannot be corrected by an O/D alternator pulley. (examples might include power steering pump? cooling? anything else?)

i first swapped just the u/d pulley, after instaling my e-fans, the volts would dip way down when the fans kicked on. i then installed the o/d alt. pulley which help out a lot. im going to upgrade to a 145 amp alt. from my current 105. i had no other issues besides that. hope this helps

With just the ASP ud pulley, I had low charging issues at idle. Mainly at night with the lights and stereo going (also had e-fans). Installed the overdrive alt pulley and mostly solved the issue. I ran this setup for years on the truck with not adverse effects on AC or engine cooling in costal MS/FL. I will be swapping the setup over to the Tahoe as soon as I procure some efans.

Seems to be similar to what I experienced as well. The OD alt pulley did help it out. To completely solve the problem, I upgraded to a 145amp alternator.

Thanks, everyone. I went ahead and ordered both pulleys (underdrive crank & overdrive alternator), along with a 180º t-stat (Lingenfelter) to help out a little with any potential cooling problems. Found out from my service guy who ran my VIN that my Tahoe has the 160-amp alternator (code KW1).
