correct me if i am wrong, but if you did have a leak, and you poured water on it, it will suck water into the engine correct? Wouldn't sucking in water into the intake runner be a bad thing?
I prefer to use carb cleaner, and i drag my laptop around to the front of the truck. Fire up the scanner and log STFTs and LTFTs, when they change drasticaly you have found your leak... I have done this on several trucks and it works like a champ, sometimes the leak is small and the carb cleaner does not change the idle at all, but the trims change...

I never said it was stupid. I said I wouldn't use water.
If carb cleaner enters the combustion chamber by finding a vacuum leak, it will enrich the mixture, and you will hear the engine sound change. Water is not combustible. However, since it does not compress, it will also make your engine sound change. I don't consider this to be a good thing. Your engine is already running lean, and you're gonna add water to it??
I'm gonna throw the ball back into your court now. Please explain to me how adding water is a GOOD thing?

OK guys, I'll try the carb cleaner FIRST, and if that doesn't work I'll try the water. I already have some carb cleaner and I have nothing on the engine painted, so it'll be fine. And what is a DRASTIC change in Fule trims that I should look for???

Water doesn't destroy the paint on your firewall or leave a mess, it doesn't eat the rubber engine components away like a lot of carb cleaners will, and for the little bit that gets into your engine, it won't hurt it. Years ago people would dribble water down their carburetors whilel revving the engine up to de-carbonize them anyways. Think of it as an internal steam cleaning.
