Valve Spring Install (HELP) Retainer Clips
Is there some easier way to keep the spring centered over the stem so I can take out the clips and put them back on? Im using the "prybar" method and the spring keeps moving down so I can't get the top clip out. I've been having to use a large screwdrivers to push the spring forwards.. but it's a pain. Is there some easier way?
Thanks

Unfortunately, with the prybar method, the spring is going to want to tilt with the pressure from the bar. You need to try and find some way to get the pressure straight down. Maybe you can rent one of the small jaw-type compressors (that you have to crank down)...very time consuming but effective. Be sure to compress the spring completely past the keeper groove and use a magnet to ****** the keepers. If you can wait, I'd recommend the Crane/VHP spring compressor, it's awesome and the springs go down straight, 2 at a time
For re-installation, put some grease on the insides of the keepers to hold them on the valve stem so that they're not falling all over the place.

I've found that a pen magnet is the best for getting them off. I have the crane two at one so taking them off isn't a problem although getting them on is sometimes difficult. When having trouble I would use a second person and compress the spring then have them use a screwdriver to move the spring either way by wedging it against the inside of the head. Usually you can get either the lower or the upper lock on and then put pressure on the side of the spring to move it where you need to.

if the head is off... I used to rebuild heads and we would just use a socket-like tool. I guess you could call it an oversized punch with a hole down the middle of it.
Put it over the valve and one quick blow with the hammer and the keepers usually just pop out and stay inside the punch.
Some of the engines had 16 cylinders so using a compressor just becomes cumbersome, when it usually only takes a quick swat with the hammer.
They have valve spring compressors that would help too... some you can leave the head on... some that you need to take the head off to use.
