Default valvetrain noise upon start up?

I have a 00 siverado 5.3Lwith 60000 miles on it.When I start it for the first time in a day or after at least 8 hours of rest there is noticable chatering.the chatering stops after about 10 to 15 seconds. Is this normal for these motors.I use plain old 10-w30 motor oil.Should i try an additive or maybe synthetic oil to try and prevent this dry starting.also I herd there are oil filters with check valves to help oil from draining out of top of motor,is this true. Any feed back would be great thanks.

Hey, first post...welcome. More than likely you're hearing piston slap which is characteristic of the GenIII style engines. Do a search on piston slap or cold start knock and I'm sure you'll find a whole bunch of info about it. Not to worry though.

Have the exact same problem with mine (78K miles). From everything I've been reading there is no real fix for this. GM will tell you that its normal and not do anything for you. I did read one spot where GM offered teflon coated replacement pistons but I'm not sure if their still doing that or not. There are a lot of people who have this problem but it doesn't seem to cause and major damage...just annoying as hell. Hopefully my motor will blow before my warrently is up so I can get a fresh one.
