the main reason you even want to do a burnout with your street tires is just to get the clean. with heat they will get a bit sticky (you can feel this by touching them after a light burnout), but the main thing is that as you drive through the staging lanes, etc. your tires will retain some of the dirt and other crap that just tends to stick to them. if you see smoke, they are hot enough. just make sure to go a few feet spinning them. that's the part that cleans them. some do a burnout, stop the tires, and the pull forward. it sure gets them warm, but if you walk up to that guys vehicle at the line you'll see crap stuck to his tires only being made worse by the vht on the track. the water is only used to make it a bit easier to spin them. part of the reason some back into the water. for most street tires with a truck of your type i'd drive around the box and back it into the water. when the guy gives the ok, pull out of the water. spinning your tires in the water flings it up onto your truck and drips it onto the starting line. once you've pulled a few feet foward, stab at the gas with the brake on. once the rpm comes up let off the brake and spin them for about 5-10 feet. not hard, first gear will do the job. this should clean them and get them warm enough to allow the vht to do it's job at the line. this is a very low smoke/low tire wear type of burnout. if you don't have a heat gun to check your tire, check it for where the tread looks cleaner to make sure you are getting a full contact patch. around 26 psi with those big tires should do it.
