DOD where it swaps to 4 cyl mode? He had that tuned out a long time ago lol. And he does 75 on hwy trips and without pullin somethin he sees around 12-13, pullin a 20 ft trailer with 5 four wheelers he sees like 8-9 but that's also at 75. It's not horrible but not the best by far. My truck is a 5.3 with 3.73s(doin 4.88s soon)on 35s with the same mods and i see 13.5 city. But his is a 6.0 with 4.10 gears so we didn't expect to much from it mpg wise. What's the stock stall size in his truck (4L70e I believe). Is it the same as a 4L60e? There's a guy round here that has a 2600 stall he says come out of a tbss for pretty cheap. And yessir highlands, tx

Good to know my mileage isnt just shitty for my truck
This is the converter he needs to get
Circle D Specialties High Performance Torque Converter 300mm for GM Truck 4L60 LS
Itll act really close to stock but get a few hundred more rpm over the stock converter, but personally if I was him Id go with this one
Circle D Specialties High Performance Torque Converter 278mm for GM Truck 4L60 LS
as itll flash a little better. His stock converter speed should be right around 2000. The extra 600rpm makes a HUGE difference out of the hole. These converters arent just a stock TB converter, theyre actually beefed up and dont cost much more than the TB converters.
On the DOD thing, you can turn it off via the PCM but you still have the shitty lifters. They cant stand the higher lift of the aftermarket cams. The heads will have to be pulled so you can swap them out for regular style lifters. Its really not that bad of a job, just time consuming.
If you need help with those mods there are plenty of us around the area to help out. I decided to skip the 70e modifications and swap in a 6L80e with a smallish converter. The ratios in the 6 speed are just much better all around.

I thought the HT1 was reportedly something of a dog down low and liked a loose converter. Doesn't sound like a good choice for something running 33x12.5 Toyos.
Plenty of small cams out there that aren't as narrow. Maybe I'm off base here...
