Default Vortec 454

I just scored a Vortec 454 for my work truck. Just wondering what to expect when performing the conversion.

Truck: 1989 Chevrolet 1500 4X4, 5.7 TBI V8, TH350 (I think)

New Motor: 1998 Chevrolet 7.4 Vortec V8, 4L80-E (4X4 trans)

Also, anybody know the HP and TQ numbers on the TBI 350?

You will have to swap transfer cases or switch you input to 32 splines on the one you have now to bolt to the 4L80E. Should be an easy swap just upgrade the rad. as well.

the vortec 454 is a beast, I had one in my last truck and that motor pulled hard. I would get a westers tune to go along with it to really let it perform to its potential.

the TBI350 is 245hp/285tq I believe
vortec 454 is 330hp/385tq , with longtubes and a westers tune I was getting about 370/420, did well offroad

Horsepower for your stock TBI 350 is 205, not 245. now the 96 vortec motors have numbers like that, 250hp. Going from 205 to 290 and a lot of torque is gonna be fun, good luck.

I'm currently in the process of ordering parts for this monstrosity! I'm upgrading to hydraulic brakes, 1998 A/C system and the engine cooling system. I also ordered this input shaft for my transfer case. Does anybody have a diagram of the driver side inner fender for a 1998 GM truck with the 7.4 Vortec, hopefully with GM part numbers. I need to order a bunch of parts on that fender and the dealership won’t help me. I want everything under my hood to look like a 98 truck for the SMOG referee.

I figured I'd post some pictures up.

BTW my truck in the stock height one.

The Vortec 454 uses the injectors that were used in the LT1 engines, 24 pph. Any conventional style Bosch style injector will work.

Most injectors are rated at 43.5 psi of fuel pressure. Some fuel systems run at 60 psi, like all the 1996+ trucks. So those 24 pph inkectors are actually flowing at 28.1 pph.

Just something to think about.

Any high impedance injector will work in the Vortec 454. I wish the smallblock fuel injection was as easy to modify as the Vortec 454.
