I’m planning on getting a 2500HD crew cab (haven’t decided on long or short bed though) in the next couple of years to fill my need for a truck. I’ll be using it mostly as an everyday type vehicle, but I plan to trailer my car with it as well (3500 pound car plus trailer) and probably do some snow removal in the winter.
I was just wondering which engine (6.0L gas or 6.6L diesel) would better suit my needs? Diesel fuel is readily available in my area as I’m just a few blocks from an expressway, so that’s not an issue.
So what do you guys think? What are the pros and cons of each, in your opinions?

I would get the 6.0 gas. There are a ton more things you can do to it as far as mods go. The 6.6 duramax will out tow any day, but I've been reading a lot of posts on other forums about problems with the Duramax. I have also read how much some people like them. The thing that I do like about them other than the towing power is it's so quiet compared to other diesels. I would ask some opinions on the www.gm-trucks.com "heavy duty" forum too.

Thanks Fast4.8!! I’ll try and get over to that forum and register soon.
I’m honestly not planning any mods to the truck. What is the difference in towing capacity between the 6.0 and the 6.6? I figure I’ll need at least a 5,000lbs towing capacity (much more if I get a covered trailer), plus another 500 +/- pounds of payload in the bed, and then maybe 600 to 800 pounds of passengers (max).
Any idea what the Duramax issues were? Reliability? They have a 100,000 mile warranty though, right?

I have not heard of very many catastrophic problems, mainly just little things like a fuel line fitting leaking or some trucks idleing erradically. There is also a ticking sound that some are having, but it seems to go away after driving it several thousand miles. Most of the complaints I see are about the Allison tranny. It has a few bugs in it that need to be worked out, and some say that it 'hunts gears' when towing.
One of my dad's friends has a '01 Duramax truck (he previously had a '99 6.0). He's a farmer and says he loves how it tows compared to the 6.0 and his two other work trucks (454's).

The 6.0 will tow 8,800lbs in a 2wd auto
The 6.6 will do 12,000 all models
Check this link for comparison info 2500HD specs
Look at the menu on the left and click "features/specs"

Thank you for the link. That was the info that I needed to see <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0">
Looks like a 2500HD with a 6.0, even in 4X4 & Crew cab trim would suit my needs. 4X4 is a must if I'm going to plow...
