Default water pump

my dad has a 1997 gmc saburban, with a leaky water pump. so tonight we took it off and installed a new one, but could not disconnect the large bolt that attached the fan and the fan clutch to the old water pump. any advice? i took the bottom plate off and wedged a screw dever in it to stop it from spinning, but now it sounds like something inside is spinning, causing the bolt to turn without becoming loose. we have the old pump bolted to a table so leverage isnt a problem.

I helped a friend change a water pump on a 98 one ton Sierra with a 5.7L . Used a strap wrench from Sears to hold the fan/clutch bs from moving while breaking the bolt loose. Should be able to use something like that on the bench as long as the pump is held-down securely.
