Default What About The 496 8.1, Is It Worth The Effort?

I came across an 02 8.1 496 today at the dealership, we are putting a new gm crate motor in under extended warranty. I can get the tired old long block for basically nothing. It has about 90k on it so I am looking at a rebuild for starters. I have a lq9 that I am getting for basically nothing as well. I am just wondering if this is even wort messing with. Does anyone have any experience wiiiith these.

It would DEFINITELY be an interesting swap. I've pondered it myself many times, just don't know how to go about checking to see what it would take to swap it over to a 1500 chassis.

Wasn't there a truck in Truckin' magazine a while back that had the swap? I'll check my back issues and see.

There was an orange truck w/ the Chevelle "flapper" hood awhile back that did it. He had to bodydrop the nose, and widen the frame rails to fit it from what I remember.

It was the April '02 issue of Sport Truck. I don't have a scanner, but there really isn't much in the way of saying EXACTLY what was done.

The truck was originally a 2500HD, but the 2500 frame was swapped for a 1500 one, and the 14-bolt was tossed for a Dana 60 b/c the 14-bolt was too big for the drop that they wanted.

"In order to make the engine and tranny [8.1/Ally] fit, special transmission mounts were made and the existing motor mounts were cut and fabricated to fit onto the new shorter and narrower frame."

I remember seeing one on TRUCKS! on Spike TV a long time ago. It had nitrous on it. It was awesome. It looked very quick and could smoke the tires at will. Talk to brad about doing it and hook me up on the LQ9

Would take a good bit of fab work. It would also add a lot of extra weight. I would stick with a bored & stroked 6.0. It would be unique though.

after looking into it it would cost alot to get this beast right, I would have to get a stiffer progressive rate spring, different shocks, bigger roll bar & custom fab some new mounts just to fit in the engine compartment & keep the handling characteristics the same. I would still have to buy injectors, fuel pump, oil pump, before I even start with the rebuild.

It would be an awesome set-up, I talked to arizona speed & marine who are doing drop in kits with these for the SS's. Too much money and time to do it right.

I am pretty sure I will just sell it. It would be an easy set-up for a 3/4 ton. Anyone interesred chime in. Comes with the intake as well. We already have it tore down, it ha a lip on thr top of one of the cylinders of about .0012 of an inch. It could be punched .0020 & be fine but extended warranty doesn't do that, wait I mean We will not do it.
