Default What do we need

I have a friend that is putting in a zo6 cam in a 2001 extended cab 4.8. We were wanting to have all the gaskets we need. We have the 2 water pump, Timing cover, front crank seal, and valve covers gaskets do we need any other ones if so what ones and part #? We were also wanting the part # for the 2002 zo6 cam springs. Summit has a different number than parts direc has for them so we wanted to get the right ones. Is that all he needs for the cam installs? Do we need retainers or can we just use his stock ones?

thats the gaskets you need.antifreeze and possibly engine oil if any water gets in there.maybe some tranny fluid,it will leak when you pull the radiator.couple a long metric bolts for removing and installing the cam.torque wrench. one that will go to 18 to 22ftlbs.

you don't have to PULL the radiator to do the cam swap. inface you don't have to unhook the tranny lines at all. you don't have to replace the crank bolt....you don't "have" to but some do for the peace of mind. i wouldn't bother with replacing the front seal either unless it's damaged or something. it's just a pain in the *** and not really something that HAS to be done. also, save yourself some time and frustration and don't try to replace the valve cover gaskets. they never seem to go in as easy as they come out.

No, you really DO have to replace the crank bolt. It's torque-to-yield, and that's one $3 bolt that i wouldn't want coming loose.

Why risk the crank pulley coming off for a lousy $3?

you really don't HAVE to replace it. it's best if you do...but you don't HAVE to. there are tons of people that do swaps and don't and have no problems. i reused my stock bolt without any issues and so have a few guys local that i know of personally. it's a personal preference really. i wouldn't re-use it more than once though.

ANY bolt that is TTY should be replaced. These bolts "stretch" when they are torqued to yield and are junk after removal. Like he said.....3 bucks to save a potential problem later.

assembly lube and you can use the water pump bolts to install the new cam. also you dont need to remove the radiator. dont unhook the tranny lines only the coolant and you can tilt the rad enough.

It's a pain in the butt to get the timing cover off just to replace a leaking seal or gasket. It may be $10 for a new crank bolt, timing cover seal, and timing cover gasket. So why not buy the insurance? Just my .02.
