Default What do you guys think of these S/C's

Just wondering what you guys think about the other superchargers besides the Radix.
Vortech are they a reliable kit, seem to have great product, etc....
ProCharger- intercooled but need tuning also that doesn't come with the kit, bad s/c tubing, bad/good kit?
Powerdyne-they are for sale for really low prices compared to other s/c kits, why, anything wrong with them?
Oh yeah I have seen another MagnaCharger s/c kit besides the Radix, it sits on the left side of the engine, and its still a roots style blower, is this the old style Radix kit, were they a good kit?
Just curious what you guys think of these other kits.

It all depends on what you are wanting to do with your truck. Any of the Centrifugal types(Vortec, ProCharger, Powerdyne) are going to give you great topend with little gain off the line without a good size converter because the boost rises as the rpms rise. Any of the roots/twin screw chargers are going to give you a pretty flat boost curve giving you a pretty big lowend/midrange gain. I have no experience with anything other than a Whipple on a NBS truck but I do have a friend with a Vortec on his GT and a friend with a Powerdyne on a Gen1 Lightning. Both seem to be quality products.

i only see one option for a blower anymore and it is the radix. those other kits all work but aren't as good, they each have their problems.

the ONLY problem i see with the radix is the pump itself is a little small if you decide to push it hard, in the past the whipple or ati MIGHT have been a better choice for those wanting to go over 500rwhp but with some turbo kits coming to the market that will pump as much air as anyone will ever want that takes them out of the equasion.

the only thing the other kits have going for them is their price, if you have a limited budget and want a blower then maybe something used for around 2k would be for you.

I currently run the "old style" side mount magnacharger. Have had it on for roughly 5000 miles; 2000 miles at 7-7.5lbs of boost. No knock retard at all. Works great for the cost under the price of a Radix. Kit came with injectors and everything I needed for a clean install. Didn't use the superchips tuner, just EDIT.

The guys above summed it up pretty good. The Radix system is pretty much considered to be the best choice for the NBS trucks. It provides power from just off idle to redline. Magnuson used to produce their side mounted system before this was introduced but that is no longer available.

Here is some info that I put together that covers most of the truck superchargers that we carry -

Vortech - about 100-110hp (not intercooled)

The Vortech supercharging system for the 4.8/ 5.3/6.0 GM light truck will impress you with the obvious attention to detail and fully integrated appearance. Increase your horsepower to 391 and torque to 420 ft/lbs (5.3 Engines) to help you pull you, your passengers and your toys over the hill or around the corner.

7 PSIG
Includes V-2 SQ S-Trim supercharger
Satin (010SQ) or Polish (018SQ) finish
Hand-held programmer controls ignition timing and fuel enrichment
OEM style cast aluminum supercharger mounting bracket
Cast aluminum discharge tube with Bosch compressor bypass valve
Molded inlet duct retains stock air box and MAF locations
Oil drain, oil feed, and air intake assemblies

We have been given the "green light" to start selling Vortech's new supercharger with Aftercooler for the 4.8, 5.3 and 6.0 trucks. This is the same kit that is available for the 2003 Silverado SS, Cadillac Escalade and GMC Denali but it doesn't come with programming. A custom program will be required. We can help you with this if needed.

Kit details based on a 6.0 truck -

Flywheel horsepower/torque 6.0 Chevrolet SS truck:
stock (factory rating) ---345/380
supercharged (estimate based on % increase @ wheels)--- 465/494
Manifold boost pressure: 7-8 psi @ redline
Includes V2 S-trim supercharger with 3.33 driven pulley
Complete fuel system upgrade includes replacement fuel injectors, fuel lines and a high flow supplemental fuel pump with harness. Included hand-held programmer also controls ignition timing and fuel enrichment.
Molded air inlet ducting assembly features the Vortech logo, maintains factory appearance and employs the stock air box
Includes replacement engine coolant pipe and hose assembly
Oil drain and oil feed assemblies allow for maintenance free operation. Tools included for simple modification of oil pan for supercharger drain fitting installation

Factory appearing cast aluminum supercharger mounting bracket assembly includes idler, drive belt and all hardware
Air/water charge cooler system included. Charge cooler assembly includes:
a) Welded aluminum charge cooler core with discharge tubes, Bosch compressor bypass valve, silicone elbow, sleeves and stainless steel clamps
b) Charge cooler water storage tank with hoses, clamps and plumbing
c) Compact water circulation pump for closed loop cooling
d) Highly effective water cooler

Supercharger kit installation time is rated at 13-15 hours.
CARB E.O. D-213-19 has been assigned to this kit (with programming)

ATI (P-1SC) - about 115-125hp (intercooled)

Intercooled ProCharger supercharger systems enable your truck or sport utility to deliver unparalleled performance without sacrificing daily drivability or gas mileage. In fact, unlike inefficient positive displacement superchargers, in most towing applications your gas mileage may actually increase slightly thanks to the superior efficiency of the P-1SC ProCharger. Stock or modified, for towing, daily driving, or racing, Intercooled ProCharger systems deliver far more performance with far greater engine reliability than any other supercharger system or power adder such as nitrous oxide. System produces 8-9# of boost and comes with a 2 core intercooler to show you a 60-65% increase in horsepower.

Magnuson (Radix) - about 130+hp (intercooled)

Magnuson Products, Inc. , manufacturer of superchargers and supercharger systems for foreign and domestic vehicles is pleased to announce the availability of the newly designed, intercooled supercharger system for the 4.8L, 5.3L and the 6.0L Gen. 3 truck engines, including the new H2.
This all-new intercooled supercharger system utilizes the Magna Charger MP112 supercharger with internal bypass valve. Torque and horsepower increases are improved 63%-125% from 2,700 rpm to 5,500 rpm, giving more "power under the curve" than any other supercharger system available. This translates into a 130+hp increase to your rear wheels!

Intercooled systems are complete with all components necessary for installation. Included in the kit is the patented intake manifold (replacing the factory nylon manifold), intercooler core, coolant circulation pump, heat exchanger and all necessary hardware to complete the entire installation.

Other components include new fuel injectors, fuel rails, factory "push lock connectors" and regulator adapter. Computer programmer communicates with the factory ECU for proper calibration of the supercharger system. Transmission shift points, line pressures and converter strategies are optimized for use with the increase in torque and horsepower. Extended power train warranty is available for customer piece of mind.

Whipple Industries, the leader in supercharging performance with industry leading technology, developed this bolt-on system for optimum performance and reliability unmatched by any competitor. With the Whipple twin-screw supercharger, boost is instant allowing for more low-end torque and incredible throttle response. Power from idle to redline, a unique feature only available to the Whipple Charger. With incredible reliability and fuel economy in mind, Whipple implemented a specially designed air-bypass system that allows the SC to only take approx. 1hp to operate under cruising conditions. This equates into incredible fuel mileage and unsurpassed reliability, simply years ahead of the competition. This is only possible because of Whipple’s revolutionary interface computer system that works with the stock CPU taking care of all the necessary engine functions to remain emissions legal and maintain proper operation in all conditions. The interface system constantly monitors the oxygen sensor and knock system outputs for OEM like reliability and safe operation. If a problem comes about, the “active boost control” system will decrease boost instantly (a Whipple exclusive) so the engine acts as if it were naturally aspirated, all but eliminating undue harm to the engine. Each system offers up to 50% increase in power, while still maintaining unsurpassed reliability and low noise levels. No one in the world combines so much quality and technology into a complete bolt on and simple to install supercharger system then Whipple Superchargers.

WHIPPLE SUPERCHARGERS FEATURES:
• Twin screw Whipple Supercharger
• Most efficient supercharger on the market
• No “ancient” rising rate fuel pressure regulator
• Whipple Superchargers “Interface” computer system
• Up to 50% horsepower increase
• Up to 50% torque increase throughout entire RPM range
• Instant boost at the touch of the throttle
• Flat torque curve for excellent towing power
• Incredible acceleration and top end power
• Whipple Superchargers air-bypass system
• Self-contained lubrication system
• High flow air filter system
• Lowest noise level in industry
• 50-State Emissions Legal
• All parts meet or exceed OEM specifications
• Fully adjustable boost levels
• Active boost control for unsurpassed reliability
• No internal modifications
• Completed installation looks factory installed
• Kits come complete with all necessary parts and hardware for installation
• 1 year warranty

Some of the systems above can be purchased for just over $3000. while others like the Radix and intercooled Vortech get into the mid to upper $4000. range.

Hope this helps,
Tom

Without a doubt, the man is right. I asked this question comparing the Radix, Procharger and Kenne Bell. Many people replied, and nearly all of the were screaming Radix at me. And after it was all said and done, people said that the twin screw (Whipple or Kenne Bell) is the most efficient. Try lookin at this.

People say that is "supposed" to be the most efficient, but look at all the problems they have had with running them. Most ditch the fmu and end up adding the bigger injectors and have to program for it. Also here is a link for the kenne bell supercharger installation www.superchevy-web.com/tech/0307sc_kennebell/
