Default What is a good price for a used 5.3l ?

Been looking around for a running 5.3l engine in my area. I'm going to do a 5.7l build with forged pistons and maybe some other goodies but want a solid working peice. So what should I expect to pay if I'm picking it up??
Here is some info I found for a salvage yard in my area.

What year 5.3l will be the best and most up to date as far as engine changes go?

Will a salvage yard give you a history of where the engine came from?

Any input would be great, thanks.

Yeah, those aluminum block (L33) engines are no good.

Where did you say you found one?

I've seen complete LM7s on here for $500 a few times.

Really looking for an iron block engine, which you would think is common in salvage yards but on the net they are hard to find on the salvage sites.
They want you to call so you can talk with greasy fat guy behind the counter I guess.

Forgot to ask, what year 5.3l should I stay away from?
Did they stop doing the EGR in 02 or 01? My 02 never had one so maybe the 01's still did?

If you look, you could probably find a low mileage one for $700 or less.
