It's good you don't have to deal with cats. Should be easy for you. I'm in the middle of my build, with cats and going up-and over the crossmember, under the driveshaft to true dual 2 1/2". I have a bit less HP than you, but dual 3" is overkill for me.

It's a blast building your own pipes. Just need a few mandrel bends and a welder.

At what point do you outgrow single exhaust? I have a 5.7 LS1 with patriot stage 2 LS6 heads, 231/239 111+2 cam, a ported fast 90mm intake, pacesetters, functional ram air and full bolt on’s all the way around it. Last time on the dyno it put down 430 to the ground. Since then ive added the ported fast 90mm. I know I am leaving some power on the table with my current Y pipe. It was the first gen pacesetter setup and the drivers portion of the Y pipe T’s into the passenger side instead of merging into the exhaust as a Y. here are some insane paint skills for illustration

I can either build the Y pipe that I want to free up some power, or go for a true dual setup with an X and some 18” long dynomax bullets (biggest they make). Am I making enough power to justify a 3” true dual x-pipe setup?
Ok see if this seems logical, i run a setup very close to yours in my 01 z28
It has a flowmaster 3" cat back that i run with a cutout and also closed off.
In the 430 rwhp range and 3500-3600 lbs range it doesnt pickup much if any opened up vs. closed. The relavence to you is that at 4500+lbs your 5.7 will move less airflow/exhaust in a 1/4 mile run needing less exhaust flow capacity.
Sound about right?

I am going to say this once again.. Band clamps are junk unless the system is smooth and clean, well put together.. They will work fine if it is a nice joint between pipes at the slip connection. They will not leak with a stainless set up, the pipes them self will come right apart( if it is a good kit or well fitting set up).. Again this can't be some half *** rigged setup.. The regular muffler clamps are POS, will not allow the pipes to come apart, as they actually crimp the to pipes together..

Vbands FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OR, if you double up a set of 3 bolt flanges... Weld them together, then when attaching them to the pipe, weld them inside and out... The flange below is almost 1/2' thick, no chances of it warping... You have to use twice as many but still cheaper than Vbands....

I have Vbands coming off my collectors, i have had not leaks or issues in about 1.5 years... I have the doubled up 3bolt flanges at all other connections, once again, no issues or leaks, all of it comes apart easily....

I'm thinking that when the time comes that I re-do my exhaust, I'll probably have the headers and y-pipe done in v-bands for easy removal when necessary.

Has anybody had any problems with v-bands leaking, or are they pretty reliable?

Here's the Y-pipe I'm running on my truck. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/FLO-Y250300/
