Default What transfer case on 2500HD trucks?

Do these trucks come with an AutoTrac case or just a part time?

i am looking at the chevy web site now and it looks to me like the hd is diferent, it shows an electric shift as an option(not autotrack). the 1/2tons and reg 2500 show the autotrack as an option.

now my question, what are the transfer cases rated at, and is the hd stronger then the reg 2500?

Its gotta be stronger if it is part-time and not fulltime/autotrac. Plus it gets bolted to the Allison and 4L80E.

Can you build an Allison?

Got idea the weight of a 2500HD crew cab 4x4?

I know with 1500HD (which is a 3/4 ton) 2500HD and 3500 trucks the front wheel base is wider due to the different front differential. I don't know about the T case so much but it is different from a 1/2 ton.
My truck weighs 5,700 lbs a crew cab would probley be around 6,000lbs.

the NP246 (Autotrac) is an option on all of the fullsize GM trucks..HD or otherwise...the standard t-case is the NP241 (non-Autotrac), there is an electric shift option on certain auto trans models....all is is a standard NP241 with a shift solenoid bolted to the case in place of a shift lever

Yelo...

In my '01 Sales books says:

Autotrac on 1500, 1500HD, 2500
Electric shift on 2500HD and 3500

Eh well, I haven't heard of a broken transfer case. Who knows what's stronger.

They use 4 different t-cases. The 2500HD will use a NV261HD for manual shift and the NV263HD for electric shift (similar in shifting to the old NV243 Insta-Trac). The 3500 trucks will use either a NV261SHD for manual shift or the NV263SHD for electric shift. Again, like the old Insta-Trac in shifting. The current electric shift t-case in the 1/2 tons is the NV246. This is what's known as the "active case". It's trade name is Auto-Trac. This unit, nor a heavier version of this unit, will not be available in the HD trucks.

I'm not 100% sure what transfer case is in the regular 2500/1500HD , I'll have to look at my brother's later.

that is some great info, looks to me like the HD tranzfer case can take over TWICE the torque of the standard 2500 or 1500 . the number after the * is the torque rating. 2500HD here i come!!

Demand NV 246* 2281 3093 86 39 5.1 1.9 8600 3900
Part Time NV 231* 1885 2556 65 29 2.5 1.1 5920 2691

Holy crap! Good to ~5500tq! In ~a 10000lbs vehicle!

I am scheming still about that 8.1/Allison combo. So much more power to be made. I did find someone (who is still in the family!) to buy my truck outright for about $23K that way I will make about $3K off of it by years end. I still need to save about another $10K to pay for this new truck in full by the end of the year.

With that bigger truck I will loose my Ride Control and Autotrac case but gain an extra gear in the trans, 10.5" rear end w/ 9.5" IFS w/ avail E-locker, and about 170 cubes! As well as 4 real doors instead of two half doors and an extra set of 6.5 mid bass components in the back.

496 cubes + 5 speed trans = bad ***! There are cams available for the 8.1, head work can be done, big headers, and superchargers! And of course the plethora of bolt ons like: cold air intake, MAF's, ported TB, electric fans, and Edit! Sounds like a recipe for a gas powered torque monster.
