Default What you think about this cam for a 4.8

I am installing a cam into a 4.8 soon and wanted some opinions on the cam i am picking. I don't want this to turn into a 4.8 bashing on your part just please give me some info....

I am thinking of running the Comp Cams 212/218 .522/.529 114 cam. I know i have to change springs and will probably go with .600 lift springs. I want around 50 hp. Think it is possible. I am also getting a set of heads ported right now, so consider that into the factor of horse power....

Thanks for your help, and please don't bash my 4.8 along with others in the sight...

You may have some idling issues, but nothing a drilled TB plate shouln't fix. If you have LS1 Edit, or a custom tune, it would like your truck even more. Another thing to consider to maximize the potential for that cam would be a torque converter in the 3000 stall range depending on your towing needs. Are you planning a supercharger? I have a smaller cam for sale with a lower LSA and a 4 degree advance ground in.

I am not using any nos or supercharger. I want to keep it realiable for everyday use. I tow alot and use it for work. I just want a stronger engine for those red light encounters.

Although, you did lose me on the 4 degree thing you were talking about. All my knowledge is in two stroke engines. So this is something new to me. Could you please explain more about what you were talking about.

Fast 4.8:: How much power would that cam you have for sale bump me up??

Advancing it a few degrees will make the valves open and close sooner in relation to the crank which will bring the powerband down where you can get more bottom end out of it. For example I needed a smooth idling stealthy cam (25k left on the warranty) so I threw in a factory F-body cam but it didn't make any power below 3k RPM so I threw in an adjustable timing chain set at +4 and now it runs much better.

I would honestly go with something a little bigger to find 50 RWHP.

Eric, 50rw is a lot to ask from a cam swap....a lot! I think with my cam you would see in the 30rw range and the one you speced out would be in the 35rw range. Probably a little on the conservative side, but better saft than sorry.

I got just over 30 rwhp from the 212/218 cam in my 4.8. From my experience, you will need tuning!!!!! I get a lot of multiple misfire codes since the swap.

I don't think that I LOST low end torque, but the motor is definitely happier at higher RPM. I had more peak tq than hp before the cam, and now I have more hp than tq after the cam.

I've been meaning to scan my dyno sheets to get some opinions. I'll try to get on that soon!!!!
