Default Where do I get a crush sleeve?

Hey my truck is in the shop right now getting the 4.10 and Eaton installed. The guy had everything but the crush sleeve. He said he would reuse the old one but I figure it would be best if I pick one up in the morning and take it to him. He has 30 years experience with building drag strip cars and has a 10 second N/A S10 in his drive way so I would think he knows, but is it reusable?? Where could I get one? Oreilly's didn't even have a differential cover gasket so I doubt they would have a crush sleeve. Can I buy this at the dealer just by itself? How much approximately would this part cost? If anyone has a part number or knows if this is the same as the 88-98 trucks that would be great info. Thanks a lot. By the way Tom's differentials kicks ***.

I'm not sure where to get one(Parts store or Dealer). But you should never reuse the crush sleeve.

I agree 100%. I would never reuse the crush sleeve. I know some folks do it, and I'm sure he has the "touch" and can do it, but the problem is that it is now too easy to over torque it and compress the sleeve farther than it was. New crush sleeves are too cheap for it to create a problem down the road. If a local shop doesn't have them, check out

Randy's Ring and Pinion is the bomb. It's a very knowledgeable west coast company that I get all my gears and lockers from. They can overnight you what you need if you decide to go that route.

Also, you probably already know this, but be sure to follow the break in procedure that came with your gears (if you bought new). Get your builder to change the diff fluid in 250 to 500 miles. While he's in there make sure he:

disconnects the driveshaft
make sure everything's torqued to spec (bearing caps, pinion nut, etc)
break out that gear marker compound and recheck the contact pattern
Check the backlash

This only takes a few minutes to do and is a very important step that most people skip.

He has had my truck for almost 24 hours and hasn't started so I am about to go get it and try somewhere else. I agree he shouldn't try to reuse any parts like the crush sleeve so screw him. I did pick one up though and some people might need the part # for future reference so here it is #1234726 $4.99 plus tax. Now I have carrier bearings, cover gasket, and crush sleeve. Will I need a pinion bearing? How much do they run approximately. Thanks for all the replies, this thread will hopefully help lots of people.

If you ever plan on putting some real power to that rear end you should ditch the crush sleeve and get a shim kit instead. this is not the same kit for the carrier and ring and pinion. it is a kit that replaces the crush sleeve with shims. Also any drivedrain shop or gear shop should have the sleeve. hell i got mine at NAPA

Yes grab a new pinion bearing while you can. I have never been able to pull old bearings from either the carrier or pinion without damaging them atleast a little.

Quickenuf is right on shims. They are superior and more difficult to install correctly. But once they are in, you don't have to worry about it. I set Dana axles that already have shims, so I have never converted from one to another though.
