The Magna charger uses a roots style charger, which is based on RPM. Which means you will get full boost at high RPM and it gradually increases along with the RPM. Whipple is a screw design which means you get full boost off of pretty much idle. Once you smash the gas, you get 6psi all the way up to redline. That gives you a nice punch from anywhere in the RPM range. I have never been in a 5.3 with a Magna, but my buddy has a Toyota Tacoma S-Runner with a TRD Supercharger, which is basically a Magna/Eaton and it runs very well. As far as noise goes, you hear the Magna more during normal driving becuase it is based on RPM. With the Whipple, boost is based on throttle position, so if you are crusing at 1/4 throttle, you do not even know it is there. Once you smash the throttle though, you can definatly hear it. It is a comletely differnt sound the the Magna at full boost, kind of sounds like a jet plane. That being said, and you want instant boost, Whipple or Kenne Bell would be the way to go. One thing to think about thought is that Magna charger is now offering a warranty on the engine and transmission for a certain amount of time, not sure how long, but I am sure someone on this board knows. The only drawback is it has to be with 4.5psi of boost, so if you changed the pulley, that warranty would probably go. If you have any other questions, just ask, Kent.

Was kind of leaning towards the Whipple and if that is the set-up that gives the best instant response it's now an easy call. One thing that I did like about the magnacharger was that the kit comes w/ new injectors, while the whipple system seems to add an aux injector before the intake manifold.
Please clarify the noise description? Which kit sounds like a jet engine and would you think the whipple is the quieter of the two. I know that the magnacharger system comes with foam to sound insulate the fender.

Gregg why don't you just buy a vortech...they are the best. The others are good but if you want something you will never have to replace get the Vortech. You can change pulleys and just keep making more power, up to 12-15 psi. You can buy a Vortech for like 3250.00 where the others are right at 4000. You can only make so much power with the others and then you have to up grade to a differnt blower...Vortech is the way to fly.

hyde - thanks for the recommendation, but according to what I have read, the vortech doesn't really kick-in until 3000 rpm and apparently you need to tap into the oil system for lubircation. I am not really looking for maximum peak boost but rather low-rpm boost which the whipple seems to provide.
I am hoping the additional power from the whipple will be enough to 'quench the thirst' since my Tahoe turns into a family vehicle on weekends. Is there ever really enough?

Under FTO, it is hard to explain, it is not annoying my any means. Maybe someone else can describe what it sounds like under full throttle because I do not know how to explain it.
On the Magna/Eaton, I have only heard my friends Toyota, so it might be completely different on a 5.3. His is more of a loud, high piched tone and it obviously gets louder with RPM. During PTO, you definatly can hear it. I think TBYRNE over on ls1.com had one on his old suburban and I remember him saying that his magna was annoying when towing, I might be wrong though. Maximumboom has one I beleive, so he can help you out with that.
From my experience, the Whipple is the quieter of the two under cruising conditions (low RPM), but when they are both at WOT, I think they make about the same amount of noise but with a completely difference sound. If you want to hear what a Magna sounds like on my friends Toyota, go to http://exploderjon.tripod.com and click the link for the S-runner 0 to 70 run and you can hear it. I will try to get some of my truck doing the same thing so you can hear the difference. Kent.

How does the whipple take additional tuning? Does it come w/ an add-on like a jet chip or is a reprogrammer like Hypertech? If I were to change tire and/or gearing, can I reprogram these changes? What about injectors or cams?
Just incase enough isn't enough.

L-Eater got custom programming from Superchips, which is similar to Hypertech, so he is able to adjust for tire sizes and rear ends that way. I used to have a JET SCU2000, which allowed me to change the settings for tires/gears, but it kept on breaking. If I do not sell my truck, I will problably go with Superchips for some custom tuning.
