If you have an Eaton, read the instructions that come with it. It specifically says to use GM minerals.

yes you are coorect. but all the builders here including century, arabie racing and pyle bros who do it day in and day out have been using synthetics in all there builds. they put it in theirs also. there are several people here that are using synths in theres with no probs whatsoever.

Eaton is awesome. It's rebuildable in the vehicle where the Auburn must be removed and sent in due to it's conical frictions. Eaton uses carbon fiber clutches as well as 400lbs preload springs...upgradable to 800lbs of preload! It's what I have in my F150.

The traction of a G80 compared to the Eaton is day and night. It's still smooth and all but there's no bullshitting when it grabs.

Detroit! Check with all the serious off-road or drag guys. Most of them use Detroit, cuz they just don't break.

I replaced my broken G80 with the Eaton unit and couldnt be happier.

One comment on the Detroit though... You guy are correct on it's undestructability but it has very poor street manners. I would not recomend one for your daily driver unless you are poring a large amount of horsepower on it.

I guess Eaton looks like the way to go. Does anybody know whos got the best deal on it? How about a part #. If i was just changing my diff out and keeping the stock gears, would i have to "reset" my ring and pinion clearances? Or will it all just bolt up?

589-Gears have good deals. They are in upstate NY somewhere. I paid ~$325 for the one I have. They are on ebay too.

I'm almost certain you're gonna have to reset back lash, so if you want gears...do them now. I'd also get new axle seals and bearings while it's apart.

Lastly...while the Detroit locker may be stronger, you lose LOTS of streetability with it. An Eaton w/ 800lbs preload springs will grab hardcore too...
