Mobil 1 5w-30 and a Wix Filter.
I change it whenever i think about it.. no real schedule.
i use to use Castrol GTX 5w-30 on my old 5.3 with a Fram filter cause they were cheap.
I get the WIX filters by the case pretty much.. and i wait for the Mobil 1 to go on sale at walmart and i stock up on the 5qt jugs.

A "good, thick" synthetic?
Its not any "thicker" Considering that both are the same weight, one is no "thicker" than the other.
Im not saying you should opt for the cheapest **** out there, but a quality, conventional oil will offer all the protection that 99% of engines need.
Consider this. Synthetic oil has only been mainstream for about 15 years.
Were there not high-horsepower setups before then? How ever did they manage?
With plain ol Dino oil, and they managed just fine.
Top fuel engines, back 30 years ago. Guess what they were running?
Baja 1000 trucks, pikes peak hillclimbs, ect. All done on conventional oil.

I didnt say synthetic was any thicker than normal oil... I said you NEED a good thick oil.... For a stock motor, conventional oil will do just fine, but for a loose built race motor, I would stick with a synthetic.. And yes 15 years ago they managed with out it.. But arent top fuel engines getting faster? hint only racing to 1000ft now? Technology has improved, synthetic has hands down better protection.

i run whatever full synethetic is on sale. in my truck and the fairmont it gets changed every 2000-3000 miles. this is on very abused set ups. in our bmw's wich see 80% highway miles i go the full recomended 15,000 miles between oil changes.
wich oil/when to change.... all over hyped in my opinion.

I have used Mobil 1 5w-30 in my truck since the first oil change. The filter is either k&n or Mobil 1 and changed every 4-5,000 miles. Considering all this truck has every seen are highway miles, I wil be ok.
And 202,000 miles later, she is still running just as strong as ever. But she is beginning to burn a little bit of oil now.
