Default why am I getting beat by a stock 5.3

Please no flaming about the 4.8 being smaller than the 5.3. I have a scsb 4.8 with the mods listed. This truck is a 2003 ecsb gmc with absolutely no mods. I know that I'm getting beat out of the hole due to traction problems, and the stock truck doesn't spin at all. When I go into second, I make up all the distance lost. Everytime I go into 3rd, the other truck seems to hold second longer than me, and when he hits 3rd, he just leaves me. I know this is well over the 1/4 mark, but I don't think we should be this close. My best run so far has been a 15.04, and I have never heard of a bone stock ec running at this time. Its a close friend of mine, so its really starting to **** me off. We both are running the same stock gears, but his truck holds the gear longer and just kills me in 3rd. I just can't understand what is up. Could it be a factory freak, or does the stock 5.3 just have that much more grunt than my slightly modified 4.8? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My stock 5.3 EC 2wd ran 15.7 bone stock. However, these heavy trucks are PIGS out of the whole, and really don't start running until 2nd and high gear. Once they get going they really pull. That is probrobally why you are getting walked in high gear. Your ET may be better but the 5.3 has more top end. Also, just because you ran a 15.06 at the track, traction on the street is a lot different, so maybe thats got something to do with it.

i think the problem is most the fact that you are losing traction in the beginning. that kills your entire run.

also you dont have that many mods. no offense, lol got more than me. but still with just those i wouldnt expect like a HUGE gain in speed. i would imagine your making the same amount of power. 99 trucks have a little less HP. 4.8s had 255 right?

my .02

The 99 had a weaker cam in there. I really think it would be another story if you had a 00+. Another thing, you say the stock 03 is holding gears longer then your supership programmer is not adjusted properly or its not doing what its supposed to do. I'd say if you raised your shift points to 5800, you should have not problems taking that EC.

It sounds like its our 99's vs. newer models. In 1999 the 4.8 was rated at like 260hp. The 2003 model 5.3s are ~ 290-295. Plus there is a huge torque difference between a 1999 4.8 and a 2003 5.3, something ~50lbs. of torque.

With your mods your probably real close to him in flywheel hp, but its probably the torque thats hurting you. Especially if he is pulling you in 3rd.

Just my opinion.

My 03 pulls tons harder than my 02 did. Granted .. there is a huge weight difference. I would say that with the Volant and headers, and the single in/dual out flowmaster my 03 feels peepier than the 02 did with the blower and all. I have yet to do anything to the computer, waiting patiently on EDIT for that.

I can't power break my 03 and smoke the tires like I could in the 02, but I think that might have something to do with no stall being in there yet.

Thanks for all the responses. Yeah, It's seems to me that if I could get any kind of traction out of the hole, I would be a ahead of him a little bit more in the 1/4. We trade wins so much. One time he will win and one time I will win. It seems to me that if I could talk him into some mods, his truck would be a moster. Oh, well, guess I need to get my truck back into the shop and do some "real" mods. Thanks again
