Default will the newer style thermostat and housing work on a 99 water pump

My 99 needs a thermostat due to a slow warm up. Like 12 miles before at full operating temp slow. I would prefer to use the later style T stat if I can but will it fit in the 99s original water pump? Right now its got the style where the t stat is part of the water outlet.

03 and later pump that uses a thermostat with a separate housing, the diameter of the thermostat hole in the newer style water pump is smaller, so im going to say no

+1, except that I believe that the design didn't change until 04 IIRC. tdrumm had an 03 and I'm pretty sure that his t-stat included the housing like my 99.

i think it was 04 when they changed it and the hole is smaller in 04-up but yes you can use 04-up thermostat and housing on a 99-03..i just did it.my 04 water pump starting poring after i got my motor back in and i had a 03 water pump laying around.the hole was bigger in it but i still used my 04 thermostat and housing and i had no leaks

I got to thinking and whats the difference in the seal? I know on the later style the seal wraps around the thermostat and sits in a recess in the water pump housing. On the 99-03 the thermostat says it includes the seal but I don't recall where the seal is located and if it sits in the water pump or not. Does the 99-03 pump have the recess in it for the seal? Its been so long since I've had one apart I really can't remember.

i could have sworn that when u buy a replacement coolant pump it is set up to take either style stat. i do quite a few of these pumps. i could be wrong but i would think either stat would work. on my truck i have a 99 trans am pump with the seperate t-stat and a small block chevy housing. the car pump originally had the stat built in with the housing. in the pic it still had the t/a housing.
