Another reason the X has to be as close to the engine as possible is as the exhaust travels through the pipe it cools and looses energy. You want the exhaust to be as hot as possible to help the scavaging at the X or point where they crossover. That is why you are benefited by having coated headers because more of the energy is kept in the exhaust to help with the above therory
