bigtex, what do you mean when you say a true ls1 block? I have a 99 5.3l. Is that not a true ls1 block? Forgive my ignorance, but I posted up about relocating the battery in the back to lose some weight up front and you saying about a 100 lbs. loss up front, is that with the block? or is 6.0 heads that much lighter? It seems like you are talking about the block though. I am going to buy a 2004 or 2005 5.3 liter silverado, is the block going to be aluminum? Is it aluminum on the 2003 5.3's?

Please help me understand.

They have aluminum blocks instead of iron, which is where the weight reduction comes from. From what I have read...the new SSR is supposed to be a 5.3 aluminum block, but to this day the 5.3's have iron blocks.

A LS1 is a 5.7 liter aluminum block motor. THe 4.8 LR4 / 5.3 LM7 / 6.0 LQ4 motors are iron block siblings to the LS1. These iron motors weigh about 80+ more than the aluminum LS1. The LS1 is a proven platform to work off of. I've seen camaros with zero mods pull 300 HP on the dyno, while most 5.3s with every bolt-on available cant get there. With good mods, its getting common for the LS1 to lay down 400+ HP.

The SSR is supposed to have an aluminum 5.3 when it finally hits the streets. I think GMs plan is to move to aluminum for all these motors in the future.

I think the reason that GM hasnt went with the all aluminum motor is the Temp issue. Iron resists more heat than aluminum, and you say why not go with aluminum? Well the only guess that I would have is that alot of people use these trucks for their everyday ''work truck'' so I think the temp would be up pretty high when you pull a tractor, or bobcat or whatever around to differnt work site's. They may change it all though I really dont know, but somthing that is really pissing me off is that now all the other makes have trucks that roll off the show room floor with alot more factry horses under the hood (345hemi,300horse ford,???lightning) <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="gr_sad.gif" /> .
It really doesnt bother me that much cause I dont like anything but GM, but like I said mabey they will come out with some more factory ponies under the hood ,soon I hope.

I thought the Trailblazer EXT had the all aluminum 5.3 as an option?? Or I guess they might have changed their mind and went to the iron one.
