Default 05' z71 - Steering squeals when truck is warm, shop sais i need whole new $1150 rack

Dropped the truck off at the GMC dealer due to a squealing noise when I turn. It only happens when the truck is warmed up. They just called me and cant find a problem with the Power Steering Pump but think it's the gear in the actual Rack and Pinion.

They say the only fix is to put in a new $800 rack and see if it stops the noise but they can't guarantee that. Total job is $1150 with labor plus the potential cost of a new power steering pump.

Any advice?

I saw in a thread you can shoot some wd40 on the gears of the thread but that was confusing since they appear to be sealed inside the rack.

If 2wd, that $1150 price tag is nuts.

My 2wd sierra rack was puked with 250k on it, cost me 200 for a new rack and I did it myself in a few hours. Then get an alignment when you are done.

Im guessing its a price on a new gm part not a reman.... I can get a reman cardone rack for about 130 for a 2wd..... Thought about figiring out how to fab one up in 99 on more than one occasion, just cant seem to figure out how id mount it...... Considering my truck is 4wd and lifted!!! Ok back to the topic at hand....

That is crazy. DIY or find a neighbor that can help install it and buy him some beer.

Truck is 4WD. The rack itself was an oem part and cost $800. $1150 installed. Plus they want $565 to install a new power steering pump at the same time. Total bill = $1715.00. The technician even told me he's never seen a rack go out like this in his 30 years working at the dealership.

They were nice enough to not charge me a fee to diagnose the problem.

If it truly is the rack I'll be changing it myself.

4x4 GMT800 trucks are definitely a Gear box with Drag links and that price is ridiculous.

I have never heard a Box whine. It's usually something with the pump like the screen is clogged or its sucking air from somewhere.

Definitely take it somewhere else!!! The fact that they won't stand behind their diagnosis with the part there replacing is a clue that they are unsure.

If they are telling you it has a rack and pinion, they clearly didn't even look at your truck and obviously have a lack of knowledge of what they are doing.

Problem has been fixed for $20.00

I bought a suction tool and pulled roughly 12 ounces of power steering fluid out of the reservoir then dumped in a full bottle of Lucas Oil Power Steering Stop Leak. It's been about 10 days now and the truck hasn't squealed once. The steering pump is 100% silent now. If the problem comes back i'll update the thread.
