I say they are junk because it sucks when a bearing goes out inside the t-case and lets the chain eat a hole into the bottom of the t-case and drains out all the fluid and smokes the clutches. Then you search salvage yards nationwide for a month and find nothing. Then you call the supplier for GM and have them ship you a brand new unit for $1500.

Yes that would suck. This would be my first 4x4, all of my other trucks have been 2wd. Honestly I probably would'nt use the 4wd (at least I say that, until it snows out, lol), seriously I have never had any trouble with my 2wd trucks. What are the chances of that happening?
HHMMMM, now you got me thinking.

I only see that happening if...

1. you beat the hell out of it

2. have a TON of power going through it

3. it was bad the day it was assembled

For a daily driven truck, I really dont see that happening unless its just some freak accident or something.

GM doesn't offer brand new units. Only rebuild ones with 90 day warranties.
You can get have yours rebuilt at a reputable shop with a better warranty than that.
My brother's 01' Z71 t-case was totally destroyed inside from that chain making a hole in the t-case. His fluid leaked out as well.
Isn't there a better way to make a t-case without a chain?

NP205 - iron case (weighs,I think 160 lbs), no chain (all gears, manually shifted, can be 2W front or 2W back), unbreakable ( used by all the big, serious hp fourwheelers and still can be found)

Well fellas, hopefully at this time tomorrow I will be the proud "new to me" owner of an 03 2500HD. I kept going back and fourth from the 1500HD and the 2500HD, something about the 2500HD just grabbed my attention more than the 1500HD.
