Default 2002 Silverado - Oil pressure issue at start up

2002 Silverado 5.3 - 160K miles.
Issue –

Started the truck today and the oil pressure was at 0…. Warning light came on saying low oil pressure. Shut it down… waited a second and restarted… pressure “caught” and went up to normal. Drove the truck as normal, but it oil pressure seemed to move around more than normal. Got home… Stated it back up.. same thing keep happening….0 and then I give it gas and it catches… goes up to 40-60psi.

Someone told me a few things to check..

1.Change the oil filter….it could be collapsing. ( even though I just changed oil and filter a month ago) I got a new oil filter… will be changing as soon as the truck cools down some.

2. Something about a O ring on the plastic pickup tube?? Can someone explain this in detail? How to do it? Part number needed?

put your truck on an incline where the front is up quite abit higher than the rear, if the oil pressure drops at idle, then the o-ring is bad, my truck does the same thing, im looking now to see if it can be replaced with the engine still in the truck (05 ext. cab long bed 4x4 5.3L)

Could be a variety of things, from a bad filter to a bad pump. Basically, you ought to put a mechanical gauge on the oil filter test port and see what pressure you get. You could just have a sender on the way out.

The pickup tube isn't plastic, it's metal and it's pretty hard to get to unless you have a 2wd. The oil pan has to be dropped for this and you will need a new oil-rated rubber o-ring or two to replace the GM block ring that rots out over time.
