Default 2009 Silverado, 6L80 1st gear whine

Hey everyone,

I just picked up a 2009 Silverado 6.2L with the 6L80. The truck works great except for a minor whine that seems to only occur in first gear. If it exists in the other gears, I simply can't hear it. It's not too loud, just a low pitched whine that can easily be drowned out with the stereo. Definitely seems to be coming from the transmission as you can hear the whine change as the transmission shifts to 2nd gear.

Anything to worry about, is this normal operation for this 6 speeds? I'm used to gear whine from manual transmission but haven't experienced it with the automatics before.

If you haven't taken it to the dealership I would.

Its always good to let them document any complaints, even if they say its normal.

Warranties are your friend.

x2 Especially if the truck isn't modded yet and you plan on future mods. If you have it documented now, and it gives you a problem in the future after you mod it, they shouldn't be able to blame the modding on the failure as the problem was a pre-existing condition.

Not sure if it's normal or not, but it's a good idea to get it checked out.

I think that's normal for that really low ratio first gear, my 09 with the 6l80 makes the same whine in first, most noticeable at the top of first right before the shift.
