if you're more concerned with life, the michelin LTX is the best street tire i've had. running this set of P265/75R16s on my truck for 4 yrs with plenty of life left. that said, i've done some limited road-coarse action, taken them through fields, a bit of mud, & a little snow & they've done pretty good for an all-season. i'm getting some firestone destination ATs next go-'round, but that's because i miss the extra off-roading i could do in my old explorer with ATs. the firestones are LT tires, though. the michelins are P (4 ply, i believe), and they only weigh 39lb each

Hankook Ipike are cheap and have Great reviews for Snow/Ice. Apparently a little noisey tho on dry pavement. Tire Rack doesn't carry Hankook but DiscountTireDirect does.

I've read a lot about Bridgestone Blizzak's being great in snow but you'd probably want it is a more dedicated snow tire if possible.

how often is it snowy in your are?

Yessir, a Blizzak is a dedicated snow tire, you wouldn't want to run that all year around...great snow tire though

Canada has two seasons...winter and construction. The snow usually flies around December, January and February are the heavy months. Our area usually ends up with 5 or 6 feet of it. The tires I've had on it have just been all terrain and are good in the snow(enough for me - my truck is 4x4 and if I ever get in a situation I just stick it in auto - never been stuck)

I'll check out discounttiredirect. Thanks for the tips about the P load as well.

I'm running Hankook DynaPro ATm's on my truck... fairly agressive A/T type of tire. Mine have near 8K on them with little sign of wear... been a good tire, will prolly get another set when the time comes.
