4.8L vs. My 02' WRX

4.8L vs. My 02' WRX
As I was coming down one of our main roads in Gainesville I hear some loud exhaust and look over. It is a 03' or 04' (new front end) RBSC Flairside 4.8L with stock 3.42's, FIPK, and 50 series muffler. The reason I know is because I asked him when I got the next light. Anyway, the race started with me and him side by side at the light, he threw me a rev so I knew it was on . I knew the trucks werent to be takin too lightly (since I have a 03 4.8 RBSC). So, I hold the revs to 5,000 RPM and take off with all 4's chirping. I instantly pulled 3 cars on him, slammed 2nd and about another car. All in all he hung pretty good all the way through my second gear, pretty impresive. Since my car is stock it isnt too fast. We talked for a second about what he had, and his gf said it was funny, they thought a Subaru would never beat them. He had the 4.8L so obviously he was cool . On a side note, this is the last week I will have the WRX, then it will be Chevy time
P.S Would this be anyone on this forum, it was a Blue Silverado RBSC 4.8 with 50 series, FIPK, flairside, stock looking around 10:30 Sun night?

He doesn't know much about cars if he didn't know a WRX would take him!
BTW, do you ever run the 1/4 in gainesville? I've seen a couple WRX's running there.

Re: 4.8L vs. My 02' WRX
So guys, what's the real scoop on the WRX tranny? I hear some people talk about it being crap, and others say they have made over 50 runs on down the 1/4 without a problem.
The reason I ask is that occasionally I have to take customers out to lunch, and I really need a 4 door car to do that. So if I gotta get a car, why not a badass little rocket like a WRX or SRT-4?
Just for the record, I am definately NOT trading my truck for a WRX. It just might be an addition to the stable one day.

Well I can tell you from experiance its not the best tranny in the world, but its not the worst. I have 25,000 miles on mine and I drive the living crap out of it, I think that if it were on a 2wd car of similar porportions it would have alot less problems. Even when it was modded around 220 whp it still felt fine. Although it can be a little hard to shift on cold mornings and it doesnt like to go into 1st unless you are going below 20 mph. From what it looks like the people who are blowing there tranny's are people who are new to manual transmission cars and cant drive or they are producing 260-320 whp, in which the WRX tranny can take, but it cant take 4wd launches with that kind of power for very long. However, there are alot of guys making around 260-320 whp mark and there tranmissions have lasted 50,000+ and keep on going. From what I hear the 2004 model has solved problems we 2002-2003 models have had. However if you really want to make some power get the Sti, there transmissions were designed by Porsche and should be able to take 450 awhp no problem, plus its a 6-speed.

Hehe, I have the 4EAT...4 speed auto. My trans is soooo much better than the 5 speed. I have much better torque distribution and can build boost off the light too.
The 5 speed is going to be faster from a dead stop but the internals aren't made for clutch dumps at 5K and instant tire grabbing...that leads to gears breaking. Also powershifting is a big nono.
