Here are the ratios for the 6l80e
1st gear ratio 4.02
2nd gear ratio 2.36
3rd gear ratio 1.53
4th gear ratio1.15
5th gear ratio 0.85
6th gear ratio 0.67

As you can see with a 4.02:1 1st gear ratio, you dont need 4.10's to get the truck out of the hole.

6l80e 1st gear final drive ratio with 3.42's.
13.75:1

4l60e 1st gear final drive ratio
3.06 x 3.42= 10.47:1
in a 4l60e equipped truck you would need to run 4.56 to be close to the 6l80e trans with 3.42 gears.

6l80e
1800 rpm, 3.42 gears, 0.67:1 OD and 30" tires guve you 70 mph cruise.

4l60e
1900 rpm, 3.42 gears, .70:1 OD gear 30" tires give you a 70 mph cruise.

So all this means that with the 6l80e trans, you get 4.56 gear'like 1st gear acceleration combined with a slightly lower cruise rpm. With the 6l80e trans, you can have your cake, AND eat it too.

With this trans there is NO reason to run lower gears like (4.10, 4.56) unless you are running tall tires.

Since the 6l80e trans isnt controleld by teh PCM, I am sure the aftermarket is working hard to come up with some sort of TCM to allow for teh 6l80e to be retrofitted into vehicles not originally equipped with it.

BTW, with a 4.56 like 1st gear final drive ratio, I would bet that the rearend is a 14 bolt 9.5" ring gear rearend, certainly NOT the 8.6" 10 bolt rear. If you fed the trans input shaft with 400 lb/ft torque, thatw oudl be multiplied to 4,499 lb/ft after it went through teh 3.42 gear ratios.
A comparable 4l60e trans with a 3.06 1st gear and 3.42 rear would be about 4,186 lb/ft at the axles.

the 9.5" 14 bolt axles have a short term axle torque rating of just under 5,000 lb/ft torque. While the smaller 8.5/.6' 10 bolt axles have a short ternm rating of 3,800 lb/ft torque.

BTW, the 10.5 axle is rated for 6242 lbs-ft and the new 11.5 inch unit found in the 2500HD/3500 is rated for 8321 lbs-ft."

I hope this made sense.

peace

Great post Hog, lots of good info. I sure hope someone can get this 6L80E to work in the 99-07classic trucks.

someone showed a chart of the two over on tech before. the Vtec truck made more power overall

All of the 6.2L engines have variable valve timing.

The Yukon Denali and Yukon Denali XL are AWD only, detuned to 380HP, and have the 10-bolt rear end with a G80.
The Sierra Denali is 2WD or 4WD, 403HP, and have a 9.5" rear end with the G80.
