Alaskans and Cold Weather People... Heater Question
#12
-60 is a far cry from -30. If his winters were here in the Matanuska Valley, where we see -10 to -30 pretty regularly, a block heater would be just find. Dex 6 and Mobil 1 are just find in those temps. But, put them in -60 or worse for a week or two, and you're going to have an unhappy engine and unhappy transmission. Not saying that they will cause an immediate failure, but accelerated wear until the temps come up is definately going to happen. Nothing like starting your truck, letting it warm up for 15 minutes, and the transmission won't engage when you put it into drive because the ATF is gelled. Wonder what's been happening inside that trans for the past 15 minutes?
Yeah, washing my truck indoors 7 months out of the year has been an adjustment to say the least. I washed my truck outside last May when it hit 38 degrees because water would flow out of the hose. That'll get you put in a metal hospital in the south

Yeah, explaining zero to people vs. -40 (which is basically the given temp in Healy throughout December and January) is so wierd. Basically take how cold it is when it's 30 (just below freezing) and compare it to 70 (perfect in my book) and that is the swing with just 40 degrees. Just like decibel levels, hard for people to conceptualize...

I to have done the "oh it's above freezing" lets wash the truck outside thing. I don't care how warm you get your wash bucket it's still flipping cold

Coldest I've dealt with is -20 and that was here in Afghanistan. I'm with the other Texan, I'll stay where it's usually pretty warm! Good luck on getting anything to start with temps dipping that low, our poor Gator about gave up the ghost the few mornings it got down really cold here.
