Exclamation Bad fuel, fuel filter, fuel pump????

I have a 2001 Chevy 2500HD with the 6.0L the other day it all the sudden started acting like it was running out of gas but I had 3/4 of a tank I could hardly get it to run at all and i was thinking crap fuel pumps gone out then all the sudden it started running again just fine so I thought maybe just had some bad fuel. But the next day it started acting up again and it just idled really rough at any rpm then it runs ok for a little bit still a bit rough but from time to time it still runs really rough like its running out of gas. so I am hoping its not the fuel pump since Im about 600miles away from home with no tools ect. I am hoping maybe its some trash in the fuel filter I have never changed it on this truck I got it at 1600000 miles and it now has 1700000 and i cant tell if the filter has ever been changed.

How do you change the inline filter on this truck without dumping all kinds of fuel everywhere since its all hard lines you cant crimp of the fuel line is there any tips would be much help!

Thanks!

remove the gas cap to relieve pressure then remove the line. Only a small amount of fuel will come out of it.Might want to clean your MAF sensor and check your o2 sensors as well.

You need a 16 and 20mm wrench. There will not be a lot of fuel that will come out. If the pump is on it's way out due to a plugged filter there is not much hope. With a new filter the pump pressure will come up and fail quickly. I have seen it time and time again.

hmmm... that's weird. i had to use a 21mm because the 20 wouldn't fit the new filter. I just changed mine last month. I didn't think about the gas cap, but I just let the truck sit overnight and then pulled it off, and as stated, there was not much fuel still in the line. it took me about 15 minutes total once I had the right sized wrenches. IMO just find a dealership in the area and get a new delco one for 20 bucks. part no. gf652 for my truck.

Yeah I just talked to a guy that said it sounded more like a MAF sensor problem to him becase the filter probly wouldnt cause it to run ok and then not on and off like it is doing. Also when I took off the old filter there was a crap load of fuel that came out under tons of presure I wasnt expecting so much presure. Also heard it could be a fuel presure regulator because when it does start running crapy it bogs down like its being flooded when you hit the gas and smells like its running VERY rich.
