Default Bad window motor or regulator?

Well, my window crapped out on me yesterday. I am trying to figure out if it is the regulator or the motor. When I rolled it down, I heard some loud cracking noises, so I thought that I had snapped a cable. But on my ride home from work, I would press down on the window switch and then immediately up. Each time I did this it would go up maybe an 1/8 to a 1/4 on an inch. After doing this every minute or so for a half hour drive, I eventually got the window half way up. Then I was able to roll it all the way up without a problem. I thought if the regulator needed to be replaced, then the window would not move at all?

What do you guys think? I've already forgot about it and rolled the window down, and now it won't budge.

Thanks

Just buy both together. They are usually sold that way.

I just thought it would be cheaper buying one or the other.

I found mine together on the internet somewhere for like $70 but I think I got my alignment wrong and now the window goes up slow and Im too lazy to go back and fix it.

NoChrome, you can try spraying some clear silicone spray in there to make it run smoother. That might help.

From what I heard, the oem ones seem to work the best. I tried calling the closest dealer to my work, but the guy told me that he would need the vin# to look up the part. I drove my beater car to day, so I don't have the vin.

He quoted me 130-200 depending on which one I would need. I really don't feel like spending $200.

I would buy the assembly. I replaced one on my parent's suburban that the wires had completely frayed on.

Just FYI, the dealers around me say they are sold independent of each other. I've called a few of them too.

They come together or you can buy the motor alone, but I'd replace the whole thing. And most insurance cards have the VIN on them if that helps.

Drivers front power window regulator with motor should be part number 20945138 MSRP=$164.20. They all supercede to the same part number.

What insurance???

Yeah, I actually thought of that a little while after I made my last post. I looked and it's on there.

Well, I ended up buying the regulator/motor combo. I am half way through the install and decided to take a break from the heat. I got on youtube, and there is actually a video showing the step by step installation. So, if anyone else needs to do this, the videos are by 1aauto. It would have been faster to get where I am at, if I had found this before. Just fyi
