i don't know if it changes with eng speed or not i can't really hear it in the cab like i said its really queit for the most part. yesterday morning it was really cold and thats when i heard it most it sounds like some body shaking a rattle can of spray paint inside the motor just really quiet.

I noticed my truck did the same thing this morning and yesterday morning. Two coldest morning's we've had here. Got down into the teens last night and was only 28 when I went to start the truck. I'm pretty sure it came from the compressor, loud squeaking noise/ball bearing's making a racket type noise. It quit by the time I got to the front of the truck and bent down to pick up the paper.

If it goes away quickly after warm up, it may be characteristic. My engine makes all sorts of noises when cold.

My first guesses would be either piston slap (common to GENIII engines) or one of the accessories or pullies in the front of the engine.

Yea I'm going to have to check mine out again tomm. morning. Just went out to lunch and it was making that same noise. I'm pretty sure that its from one of the accessories.

Usually I hear people complaining about a ball bearing noise and it turns out to be pinging. Not sure why it would be happening at cold startup though.
Have you used hpt scanner in the morning on it and checked for knock?

you might want to hook a scanner up to that and check for knock. Where in the powerband is this taking place? WOT, Tip in, etc?
