I also have a black shorty aluminum antenna, and it works just as good as the original, and looks stealthier than the original IMO. I first got it when I used to park in a garage at my old apartment, and the factory antenna was too long and would get caught on things as I was pulling in. Now I'm glad that that was the case, as I'm much happier with the shorty antenna than the original.
Antennas are cheap, take your pick. If the base is broken, you have to replace the base/short piece of antenna cable that goes in to the cab through a hole with a grommet, kinda behind the right front fender. I had to replace mine back around 2001, 2002ish, when I used to have an American flag on the factory antenna, and it wiggled around so much from the wind that the cable broke off at the base. It was a bit of a PITA to replace, but it's doable. IIRC, it would have been easier to remove the fender, but I snaked my way behind it
