Brake Pads
Hello Everyone,
Had my 01 2500HD 2 wheel drive serviced and they said my brake pads are still in good shape.
The pads are original GM.
They stated the pads are still about 4mm thick.
How thick is a stock new pad ?
How many miles of " normal " city / highway driving do I have left ?
Thanks !
PSJ aka Marc

I have a 2000 Silverado and have almost 60k on it and just replaced the stock pads with some Hawk pads to get some better stopping power. My brakes were sqeaking and I thought for sure they would be going out since they had so many hard miles on them. When I took them off they still looked really good, I was amazed by how much pad life was left. How much time you have left on them depends on your location, driving habits, etc.

My dad has over 70K on his 2000 Z71...and those pads are still very thick..i believe the factory stated them as being 100K pads...we all know how well that goes..but..so far..these GM pads are lasting a LONG time

I sold my '99 ecsb with 125,000 miles on the original pads. At 115K I took it to my brake guy and he told me to come back in another 50K. Not only is there longevity in these factory pads, they don't throw dust or squeel (at least mine didn't).

on mine the right rear inner pad (I think) wore down considerbly faster than the rest, I understand its somewhat common, but the one pad was toast and the rest had at least 50% left, with 53,000 miles

I replaced my rear pads on my '00 Z-71 at 90k miles, still have original front pads and original 4 rotors now @ 135k miles. My '02 rear pads were replaced at 105k miles and still have original fronts and all 4 rotors @ 136k miles. I now know why GM charges $150 a set for pads!! They last 100k miles, even being an aggressive driver.

My factory pads outlasted 2 sets of brake rotors, one set was replaced under warranty at about 11K, and the other set I did myself at around 37K when I upgraded to PraiseDyno pads and rotors. The pads were like brand new (accept the right rear as mentioned above...but there's a tsb on that which states that road debris on the brake assembly causes this...there's an inner wheel well mudflap from GM that's supposed to help cure this). Anyway, the factory rotors were rusting and flaking like croissants. So far the PraiseDyno stuff has been great about a year or so later, and stopping performance has improved from stock.
