somebody want to answer me this, is there any place that records the mileage besides the cluster. Ive read multiple times that the cluster is the only place its stored, but thought i also rem reading from somebody that it is indeed stored in the pcm or somewhere else...?
reason i ask is because my dads cluster completely went out, only thing i saw working was the check engine light and back lighting. well he takes it to dealer for fix and they say they have to send it (cluster) out to gm to try and recover the info, which will be a week probably...

how "out" are we talkin? i think i said the only things working on the cluster from what i could tell were the back lighting and the check engine light, absolutely nothing else... everything went dead even the info center with the mileage and everything else.
Im fairly certain it will get fixed no problems, eventually... but my question is there any place else besides the cluster the mileage is stored?

The PCM does store some mileage info. I worked on an 06 2500HD where the cluster would only read up to 13 miles then reset to zero. To get the correct mileage to have the replacement cluster programmed I was able to use a GM Tech 2 scan tool to look up mileage since last reset or since DTC clear (not sure on the exact wording on the Tech 2 display this was 4 years ago). However if the PCM has been replaced or possibly if any scan tool was used to clear DTCs or if the PCM was reflashed this info would probably not show the true mileage.

well i have a cluster of an ss and it kept the miles of the cluster.. so my stock one is at home and everytime i put it on it shows my original miles.. so incase i want to sell my truck i can just put my original cluster and they will think its at 36.000... hahaha.. so i hope that answers ur question.. and about the cluster.. search it online... their is a couple write ups on how to fix it on ur own.. i spend like 45 to fix the ss one i have.. put all new engines and new leds... it took like an hr..
