Insurance for the diesel is no higher than a gas. All my insurance co worried about was the "trim" level.

Another great thing for the D-Max is the Allison Tranny. What a great peice of art. And the "towing" program is great, for upshifting and down shifting. The Allison even allows towing in OD.

Dave....Mike Brown is looking for a crew cab D'max right now. You might want to get in touch with him. He will likely buy a truck in the next week or two.

Never gave all this mileage and maintenance much thought. Good post Tony and good info. Maybe I will try to find a used D'max instead of the 6.0L.

any diesel can pull a load in overdrive. it isnt tranny specific. that is the benefit of making peak tq at 1600-1800 rpms and it never dropping till redline. lol

Gator, I haven't gotten a chance to read about the Cummins 600 fuel mpg. Do you think this is a new hardware issue, or something with the tuning? Would I be better off buying a non-600 version '03-'04 HO Cummins and just doing the programmer stuff myself? Can the fuel economy issues on the new 600 be resolved?

according to what i have read, and am no expert on the cummins platform, those guys are used to low hp diesels with their 5 speed manuals getting 20 mpg stock on flat ground. with the new "quiet" 600, much of the noise reduction is in the fuel rails (common) design - made by bosch. this also has lead to bad fuel economy (something all the diesel manufacturers are getting hit with) since everyone wants over 300 hp out of a diesel engine. another big factor is how you drive it. diesels get great milage because of low tq at low rpm. now if you want to run 85 mph @ 2600 rpms then your fuel milage will suffer. diesels of old never worried about running 85mph+ since they didnt have the upper rpm horsepower.

as far as all out power, i def think the 550 tq trucks have much more potential with less modifications. the 600 has EGR and other emitions equipement.

again all of this is stock talk. put on a programer and everything changes including better milage by a few mpg.

Yeah, I read those threads this afternoon. Took a couple hours to browse that site. It has me bummed about the 600 Cummins after reading those posts. But, I also learned that it doesn't take much at all to make a 555 surpass the 600. Stock performance doesn't really matter much anyways with me lol.

-SO- I might have to consider a used or left over 555 Ram if I want one. I'll bet the 600 would do just fine here in Houston though, as we have no hills or anything.

What mpg do the D-max and P-Strokes typically see?

Also, do you know what is worse on mpg, a 2wd dually, or a 4x4 single rear wheel?

Id stick with the HO 5.9. Im not too fond of the VGT or EGR **** on a diesel yet. We have some Detroits engines at work with the EGR and VGT. Have had alot of problems with them so far. They run an ungodly amount of boost at idle! Turbo shaft speeds are alot higher too!

well ofcourse a lighter srw 2wd diesel will be more efficient than a heavier 4wd dooley crew cab but as for our truck (a 2500 2wd ext cab) we get 18 mpg at 75 mph totally stock. with the programer we get 20-21 mpg @ 75 mph on flat ground (florida is like houston). This is real world data, not that heads up display crap (which is off a few mpg). I am not easy on any vehicle and pass at will.

but ofcourse like ANY of these new powerful diesels, the more you keep your foot in it, the worse the milage is. diesels are more reactive than gas trucks in that area.

if it were me, i would go with a 555 HO truck and BOMB it if i could get a great deal. otherwise, the 600 isnt a bad choice at all. That is if you want to stick with a cummins/dodge.

I'm pretty sure the cummins 600 doesn't use EGR.

look near the bottom...
