I'm asking all these questions for a buddy that is looking for a truck for himself, and the other day my gov-lock, G80, or whatever you want to call it grenaded and now he's kinda scared that if he gets a truck with one he'll have the same problem.

So my question is, does the G80 in the larger rear ends have this same problem, and is there a good replacement out there (for instance I used a Tru-Trac in mine).

Also while I'm on the subject what year did GM start using the Gov-Lock style G80, cuz his wife has a 99 old body style Tahoe with the G80 code.

It's an option i think. If he's interested in buying something just look in the glove box for RPR code G80. If it's not there then it don't have one.
Trutrac is the best replacement IMO.

I think as long as your not really hard on your drivetrain, the g80 holds up for the most part. But when your too ruff is when it explodes.

There is a G80 and a G86. I beleive the G86 is used in the TBSS's in the 14 bolt 9.5SF.

Anyone know the differences between the G80/G86.

I thiought G86 was in the trucks with the quadrasteer option as well and is a "limited slip differential" where as the G80 is a "locking differential".

The G80 is mechanical and G86 has clutches.

But **** I could be wrong.
